It is a somewhat lesser known smaller growing cultivar of Jatropha, and is known by many common names including Dwarf Jatropha, Spicy Jatropha, Peregrina, Firecracker, and Chaya. It is often grown as a small patio standard tree form, or as a larger multi stemmed shrub. In addition to its nice size, this plant is a prolific bloomer that is covered with cherry red clusters of five-petaled flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies throughout most of the year. Its ability to withstand high heat and humidity make it a popular choice in southern landscapes, as well as a star on the porch or patio in cooler climates. Dwarf Jatropha grows large enough quickly enough to be a nice patio or porch plant, but remains small enough to be wintered over with ease. In addition to these attributes, the overall plant is very attractive with large dense lobed leaves of a variety of shapes ranging from ovals to fiddle shapes. It is easy to care for and will grow in wide range of soil types. Supplemental irrigation is needed until becomes well established. Mature, established plants are quite drought tolerant.
