Slim with a silver finish that matches the laptop. Front loading with no tray makes it very clean and easy to use. Simple setup, works straight away using Windows 11, including a CD-ROM to download the media suite. Quiet operation, the disc needs pushing nearly all the way in before it is grabbed and ejects the CD halfway out. The picture shows it with the protective top sticker still in place. Also, works with Mac. Not sure on the recording speed but to rip a 20 song CD took under 5 mins. Recommend.

There are cheaper units around but I wanted a known brand for reliability. This Hitachi unit is smart-looking and also accepts and ejects the disk (like a car unit) - much nicer than a flimsy tray that comes out. The unit looks like metal, and is metal, but has a plastic film on top that makes it feel bit plasticky. I guess you could remove it if you prefer.The unit simply plugs into a USB port and away you go. It also comes with a free CD of Cyberlink media software if you want to try it. One bit of advice - don't pick it up or try to move it when it's spinning because it makes unhappy noises.But on appearance and ease of use, which are the main things, full marks.

It does not play DVDs directly to a TV, or use plug & play as you have to install software. Otherwise a nice product.

The disc reader is perfect lightweight easy to use out of the box on Mac very pleased with it.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. More often than not when I plug it into my computer it isn't recognised. Very frustrating.

My new iMac doesn't have an internal drive (my previous iMac did!) and so I decided to buy an external drive but decided against the high-priced Apple super drive with its bad reviews. I noticed that many of the drives available on Amazon are by names I hadn't heard of before and so I opted for one of the higher priced drives that had good reviews but when I got it it was VERY noisy and also skipped during play and so I returned it.Hitachi/LG is obviously a more well-known name and this drive is more expensive again - twice the price of the Amazon recommended drive but still much cheaper than the Apple super drive. However, it does come in a silver finish that perfectly complements the base of the iMac and it is very neat and compact, slot-loading and complete with an eject button. It was immediately recognised by the iMac and it loaded and ejected discs without a problem and playing both mp3 and commercial CDs and also DVDs was done without any noise from the drive. Burning music on to a blank disc was carried out quickly and quietly and with good results. The drive came with 'Media Suite 10' but I couldn't get this to work with my iMac - it is a Windows program.

Received promptly but product description states it's a hybrid drive but it will NOT work with Chromebook's. No mention of this anywhere so sent back for refund.

The product is described in big letters as "Hitachi-LG GP70 External DVD Drive, Slim Portable DVD Player ..." but be warned that it does not play DVD-Video discs.The box in which it is supplied does (more accurately) use the words "DVD Writer" and "Data Storage" but, to a non-techie like me, the meaning is not obvious from the product description on Amazon.

Nach mehreren externen Billig-Laufwerken, die ständig Probleme mit DVDs und deren Kopierschutz hatten und zudem nach spätestens einem Jahr den Geist aufgaben, bin ich jetzt mit diesem Gerät hier glücklich. Es ist bei mir fast täglich im Einsatz und liest alle DVDs anstandslos. Das Einlesen nach dem Einlegen der DVD geht schnell, es hängt sich nie auf, wie das etwa die vorherigen Geräte ständig machten, und kann auch problemlos nur mit USB-Kabel am Laptop betrieben werden. Es ist nicht besonders ernergiehungrig. Der Slot-Mechanismus arbeitet auch reibungslos und ist weitaus komfortabler zu nutzen als die Geräte mit ausfahrendem Lademechanismus, den man immer wie ein rohes Ei behandeln muss. Ich hatte erst Bedenken, dass bei einer Fehlfunktion vielleicht mal eine Disc nicht mehr ausgespuckt wird... aber hier läuft einfach alles wie es soll. Auch nach über einem Jahr gibt es hier nichts zu meckern. Ein grundsolides Laufwerk, das sein Geld wert ist.

Met veel plezier heb ik deze speler een paar weken kunnen gebruiken, totdat er een DVD in ging die er niet meer uit wilde, wat ik ook deed. Probleem met deze speler is dat er geen "nood gaatje" zit om de DVD er mechanisch eruit te halen. Uiteindelijk heb ik de speler moeten openbreken om de DVD eruit te halen. Dus koop een speler met "nood gaatje", niet deze.

Sí, es un lector/grabador más caro que otros modelos, pero merece la pena. El sistema slot-in es realmente cómodo, funciona muy bien y queda mucho más high-tech que el andar encajando los discos manualmente en las unidades de bandeja. Éste Hitachi es compacto, sencillo y elegante. A pesar de ser de plástico, a la vista puede pasar por ser de aluminio. El nivel de ruido es muy bueno. Lo uso sobre todo para escuchar música y tan sólo hace algo de ruido al principio, pero nada molesto. Sin duda es mucho menos ruidoso que mi anterior unidad interna. Como pegas diría que es muy ligero y no tiene buenos antideslizantes en la base, de manera que meter un disco o pulsar el botón de expulsión es tarea imposible sin sujetarlo con la mano. Yo le he puesto antideslizantes en la base y un tope por detrás para que no se mueva. También, al ser tan fino, meter o sacar los discos colocado sobre la mesa es incómodo, por lo que lo he ubicado sobre mi receptor AV. La grabación de CDs/DVDs aún no la he probado pero me imagino que no dará problemas.
