I am going to have a gravel driveway paved. Would there be any advantage or disadvantage of installing the sensor wire under the pavement beforehand?

Before paving, I buried a thick walled pvc pipe across the driveway so that the ends of the pipe went beyond the edge of the driveway and were accessible. After, they paved the driveway, I fed the sensor into the pipe using a pole marked so I knew when to stop pushing leaving the sensor midway in the driveway. I adjusted the sensitivity and it works great and if I ever have to replace or repair it, I can simply slide it out of the pipe.

Can you hook up an additonal audio alert in a differnt location from the receiver?

Yes, you can have multiple senders and receivers ( w multiple alert sounds too)

Can the probe be located in a way tht only incoming vehicles are detected?
