What's the difference between k1003 and k1004?

Both very similar.  K-1003 is an OTO drop test that uses a yellow comparator to measure chlorine level.  OTO drops are used to see if chlorine is present and match the shade of yellow to know how much chlorine is in the water.  K-1004 is a DPD drop test that uses a pink comparator to measure chlorine level.  DPD drops are used to see if chlorine is present and match the shade of pink to know how much chlorine is in the water.  Some people can see yellow better than the pink or vice versa.  Both also measure Total Alkalinity and pH levels the same way, no difference there.  There is also a FAS-DPD test with uses a powder that turns pink in the presence of chlorine and you test by adding drops until it turns clear.  OTO and DPD drop tests measure Total Chlorine and Combined Chlorine (you have to do math to get Free Chlorine) and they have limits to how high it will accurately read total chlorine.  These are typically used for a swim/no swim quick measurement.  Anything above 5 ppm there is no distinction in color and therefore is the max in those tests. FAS-DPD measures well above that to a max of 50 ppm and measures Free Chlorine and Combined Chlorine (most accurate measurements with FAS-DPD).

I purchased the K2005 and am having trouble following the directions. Is this one easier to use?

I have found this kit easy to use since it has clear instructions on the testing and results therein. The K2005 is made by the same company, so it should be a great product, just more tests and better results. I use mine in an in ground spa and have had great results though years of use.

Does this test kit work for salt pools?

Yes, this works for salt pools, since salt pools simply have a salt cell chlorine generator, and the same testing is required as for regular Pools using chlorine tablets.  This is the exact same pool testing kit sold at Leslie‘s pool stores, yet at much lower price.

Question 4

Is this kit supposed to include r003 and r007? bevause mine came with extra r01 and r02 instead.

Your kit should have R0003 for measuring total chlorine, and R0007 as the first reagent for total alkalinity. There should be 3 bottles with yellow caps -  R0001,0002 & 0003. Two with red caps R0014 & 0015. Three with green caps  - R0007, 0008 & 0009.
