During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, The Imitation Game a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. Review: Great must watch movie - Great acting. Excellent movie Review: Great movie! - I’ve watched this movie many times, and I never get tired of watching it. SPOILER ALERT!!! The story of the very complex enigma machine is a fascinating one, and the fact that Alan Turing figured out how to decode it is mind boggling. He helped win WW2 for the allies, and saved millions of lives by doing so.

The True Story of the Men and Woman Whose Works of Genius Helped Us Win World War II
Saw this film in theaters, and it widened my eyes drastically to the legendary story of Alan Turing's work during World War II, which wasn't declassified until the 1990s, meaning his great work was left in the dark and forgotten for since the Allies beat the Axis Powers. Just because he was a homosexual, in the post-war years he was left persecuted by the English government that he so desperately protected, forced to take hormone therapy to suppress his homosexual desires. Turing's eccentrical ingenious personality is portrayed by brilliant actor Benedict Cumberbatch, star of the hit British contemporary TV series "Sherlock," and an actual relative of Alan Turing himself. His performance is so powerful you get tears in your eyes, and apparently Cumberbatch even broke down in tears after he was done filming b/c he became so attached to the role. Keira Knightley plays Joan Clarke, a brilliant woman whom Turing hires to join his top secret team of code-breakers at Bletchley Park, and when she is asked to come home to her parents b/c she's nearly 30 without a husband, Turing knows he can't do the job without so he proposes despite the truth that he is in fact a homosexual, and though there is little sexual attraction between the two, the romantic relationship they share based on an intellectual level is greatly inspiring. The conflict in the story is deciphering a Nazi code called "Enigma," that the Germans use to send coded messages back and forth, however the greatest obstacle is that every night at midnight the settings on the typewriter-like Enigma device reset, so each day of cryptoanalysis work is all a waste and has to be trashed just to begin again every day. Turing figures out the problem: they're humans trying to crack a machine, therefore he designs and builds the first machine to crack a machine, which, of course, everybody believes to be truly absurd, but in the end he proves to be correct, and his machine, he dubbed "Christopher," turns out to be the first prototype of the modern day computer. Due to all his hard work, his team alone secretly become the ones to turn the tides of the war, and without their top-secret efforts World War II may have been won by the Axis Powers. This is by far one of my most favorite and cherished movies, because the noble theme is truly a brilliant one that reminds all outsiders and outcasts to remember that "sometimes it's the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine."

Good movie, but short of great movie.
The DVD worked fine. As to the movie: I liked it. I have been aware of the general story for a long time and it provided more insight into the story than I had previously. I gave it four stars instead of five because I thought the acting was over the top in places and some of the situations were exaggerated to the point that I thought they distracted from the movie. In many places, it was not historically accurate, but it isn't trying to be a documentary.

Excellent Film and Performance
We really enjoyed this film about Alan Turing, despite hesitation to purchase because of Benedick Cumberbatch’s co-star Kiera Knightly. I didn’t have high hopes because she usually doesn’t act so much as engage in constant emoting and heaving heavy sighs while rolling her eyes. His performance was flawless and hers kept pace nicely, as did the other cryptographers in the group.

Star Trek: Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this awe inspiring movie,The Imitation Game. the race to crack the German Enigma code.On every level this movie is a winner through acting, scene sets, fabulous emotions all on display by all characters.Keira Knightley co-stars and is amply good and convincing in her role. This is a true story of the task of trying to figure out the Nazis secret code machine,Enigma.Historically correct and just a treat all around.Takes place in WW2 and England.Truely a fascinating movie and an excellent commentary that is worth the price along for this film. This is a dvd review and comes with feature commentary and making of and deleted scenes.Very good for a dvd now a days seeing its big brother blu ray has one upped the dvd development and most blu rays are jammed with special features which are so invaluable with a movie like The Imitation Game that is in fact a true story. Also staring in this flic are Matthew Goode and Rory Kinnear..Movie is 1 hr.52 mins. long. You can't go wrong with this movie and is definitely awarded 5 out of 5 hot buttered popcorn stars.Another good movie you might like regarding WW2 and the Enigma code is the movie itself called Enigma staring Kate Winslet and Jeremy Northam and also the movie U-571 staring Matthew McConaughey , Bill Paxton and Harvey Kietel. Both these movies are also very good. The Enigma has its secrets and its codes will change your life forever. c

and this is one of the few. I borrowed this movie and enjoyed it so much that I purchased it since it bears watching again.. It had an easy flow to it, never felt long. Everything about the movie was excellent: Acting, Directing, Script, Dialogue, the way it went back and forth and gave bits and pieces of his childhood, it all drew you into the movie and made you feel as if you were there. I would have rated it higher had I had the option and sometimes wish there was the option here to rate from 0 - 10 (rather than 1-5), this would have been a 10 (have reviewed some that I would have liked to give a 0). It was an eye opener and gave me a different perspective of the war that I was never taught or read about and am grateful that this story has come to light. The thought of a few people dictating when to leak information and who is to live is an awakening thought though it still happens to this day. It is very sad how people were treated back then, to be used, fully knowing "who he was", then be convicted "for who he was" is an outrage. Myself being born in the early '60's and had teachers who were born at the turn of the century, and they in turn taught by people who were born in the 1800's, I remember the narrow mindedness of people at that time. Though we still have a huge distance to go for equal rights and teaching people about not bullying, we have narrowed the gap a bit since then- thankfully! I have seen Benedict Cumberbatch in one other movie called Amazing Grace (have watched this movie twice as well) which was inspired by true events and that movie rated a perfect score for me as well. He plays the humble role very well.
