“Eliminate All Other Factors, And The One Which Remains Must Be The Truth” - Sherlock Holmes, Chapter 1: The Sign Of Four
It is with great joy and sorrow that I have finished, at last, the reading of this amazing collection. It includes, as best I can tell, all original Sherlock Holmes canon as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have been a lifelong fan of Doyle’s works and in particular of his beloved detective, Sherlock Holmes. I have at various times read most of the tales of the Baker Street bloodhound but never all at once. When I saw this convenient compilation which included all of the original tales in one volume, I purchased it at once on my Kindle. What an adventure it has been! If you have made it this far, the quintessential question you are trying to answer is “Why should I want to read this?” I offer several arguments in favor of it. Honest to the fame of its hero, the tales are witty and entertaining. They are often very surprising. Taken as a whole, they are also very educational to both literature and history buffs. The reader need not fear being lost in a mass of unmanageable text either; the format of this collection makes it very easy to navigate. Most importantly, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous characters in all of English literature. He has become the archetype of the brilliant detective – how many movies, television shows have you watched that either starred a version of Holmes or were about characters in no small part inspired by his adventures? Go back to where it began. Go back to a different time, a different era. Go see the world as Sherlock saw it. See it through the eyes of his dear friend Watson who, if you do but a little research, bares a suspicious resemblance to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself. If you are a fan of crime fiction, want to be entertained and are a fan of affordable entertainment (I paid $6.99 for this collection on my Kindle), the truth of what you must do is clear. Click buy. As Sherlock might say, “Come, reader, come! The game is afoot.” A few key points jump out at me that may interest both new readers and longtime Holmes fans alike. Some of these observations regard the works in general while others pertain to this collection specifically. First of all, readers will quickly find upon their arrival at 221B Baker Street that the wit and circumstances of the characters in these tales are very fresh even 100 years after their chronological end. Not as graphic perhaps as modern crime genre demands, the heroes and villains who work with and against Holmes and his friend Watson certainly are believable. They are motivated by the same things that motivate people today – greed, lust, revenge, loss, fear and loathing to name a few. While some of the circumstances may seem farcical to the more cynical readers of today, certainly in the times they were written they fit perfectly into the general assumptions about crime. While some of the tales are more predictable than others, more than a few will keep the reader guessing right up until the last line. The second observation I offer is in regards to the educational value of this collection. Though not specifically aligned chronologically, the tales generally run from around 1880 through 1914, ending roughly around the beginning of World War I. As one traces the path through all those years, one sees the changes to everyday life wrought by new technological developments. Doyle’s characters evolve – graduating from telegraph to telephone and from horse-buggies to automobiles in the later years. Even the words change as one reads, seeming to me at least to include more and more American vernacular as one proceeds to the end. Finally, I want to compliment the editors who compiled this collection. Despite its more than 1800 pages, I found very few formatting errors. A few extra spaces here, a sentence cut in half there, all in all very minor issues that were few and far between. The inclusion of illustrations at key points in the narration was entertaining and illuminating. Each section, there were four total, had its own index so navigation was very convenient in the event of losing one’s place. There were very few grammatical issues – I didn’t compare every single line to the original printed versions but what I compared was more or less exact. All in all, the way things were put together should be a model for other editors attempting similar feats. I hope by now you have decided to purchase this collection. I pray also that I did not bore you with such a lengthy explanation. It is a very long collection but I assure you, dear reader, it is an absolute pleasure. Should you choose to make this purchase, I have every reason to believe you will not regret it. I will leave you to it.

the complets Shrelock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
I found this book advertised on my Kindle. I have found that amazon.com knows my taste in books and generally speaking recommends books that I will enjoy. Their help line is also invaluable and the people who assist you are very hellpful and very nice and, really important, patiente. I love amazon.comI would recomment this book to anyone who is a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast. This tome is a wonderful addition to any library. I especially love it because I am no longer able to handle large heavy books due to arthitis in my hands.Sherlock Holmes is the all time consummate sleuth. I have been a fan for over sixty five years and never tire of reading of his exploits which almost always include the ever famous Dr. Watson. They form a near perfect partnership. I love Holmes' droll humor, quick wit and ever ready ansewers. He never fails to incite Watson's sheer amazement and admiration of his genius. Shirlock's exceptional intellect and creative power is as always a joy to observe. The real beauty of it is that the book costs 00.00. How great is that. It provided hours and hours of reading pleasure. this is a book that can be put down and months later picked up to once again the happy enjoyment of submerging yourself in one of his adventures.I have to smile a little at his description of the heriones. They are almost always tall, stately and of extraordinary beauty. Either with an abundants of raven black hair, large dark luminous eyes, full red lips and a look of sweetness itself. Or gloriously coifed flaxen hair and great shinning blue eyes with the innocence of a child. His male counterparts are tall strong with well chiseled faces. Well, what can I say these were all written about a period of time when things were different and a softer view was sometimes taken as to who was guilty and who was not A great book and a great read and hours of good entertainment.bookwormetc.
