Excellent book!
“It is not fun feeling mad.” This is the sentence that sparks the whole book.A young boy Josh faces some challenges where anger creeps in. Should he “blow his top” like the tea kettle that comes to a boil? The author, Michael Gordon explores some different ways to deal with anger.Josh notices his heart rate increases, he breathes heavy and he grits his teeth when he gets angry! He also clenches his fist and feels his chest getting tight. I feel it is important to be able to check in with one’s body in connection to emotions being experienced. This is from my own 25 years of work as a psychiatric nurse working in a hospital.Children are capable of understanding the changes that their body feels. One way to deal with anger is balling it up and throwing it away! The drawings in this book are very good animating the angry balls of fire that Josh throws away!Another technique described in this book by Josh’s sister is counting to 4 & taking a deep breath. Joshua’s parents are quite supportive in helping Josh cope with his anger responses to different situations. His dad deep breathes with him and his mother gives him positive praise for calming down and not letting anger ruin his day.The things I liked about this book are how the family is involved, looking for body cues that let a child know they are feeling angry and some different techniques to explore coping with anger. It is a feeling and it will go away!

sweet and reassuring!
A cute little story about a boy who has a hot temper and learns different ways to sweep the anger away. My very favorite part was when it informed my son that "it is fine to be angry". We had yet to find a book that tells my boy that his anger is normal and not inherently bad, but this one simply nailed it. The illustrations are eye catching as well. Thankful for this book!

Perfect for toddlers!
This is GREAT for my 3 year old!! It explains that it’s ok to get angry, just don’t let it ruin your day. It gives great ideas for kids to do when they get angry... pretend your anger is a ball and throw it far away. Take deep breaths, count to 4. My son loves it

Great for teaching big emotions!
These books are great for teaching littles to deal with big emotions! I found we can easily diffuse a situation before it becomes a tantrum, and I can usually get him laughing.

Delightful
Everything about this book is just delightful-illustrations, rhyme, theme, story idea. This is a book you could read over and over when teaching a child how to deal with anger.

Lazy writing
While the advice for calming down is useful, most of the time the child in the story gets angry is because his mother says 'no'. There are no situations at school or issues with another child that make him angry, just his mother who keeps saying no. This is lazy writing and is unrealistic.
