not expecting it to be anything like the Penja pepper I've tasted
To be honest, I ordered this on a whim, not expecting it to be anything like the Penja pepper I've tasted, and I was pleasantly surprised! There is a nice subtle, build of heat that I just love and it plays very well with other African and international spices. It seems to work on everything so far--poultry and veggies alike. I'm certain it would be delicious on a whole fish oven-grilled with Knorr, Adobo, Sazon and other spices. I may have missed this in reviewing the description before purchase, but I was expecting to find a powder instead of whole peppercorns. I emptied out my grinder, leaving very few black peppercorns and filled it with the Penja pepper. It tastes like a very exotic, spicy black pepper. I was in a bit of a cooking rut and this spice brought my inspiration back. Thank you so much for making it available on Amazon!

A marvelous, versatile pepper!
The Penja Pepper from Cameroon is my new favorite. It isn't exceedingly hot, which means I can use it liberally on salads, pastas, fish, and veal without overwhelming these dishes. To me it has a slight smokey flavor, not musky as I've heard it described. I love loads of pepper on pasta with a cream sauce, and this particular pepper enhances the taste without adding too much heat. Since it is a somewhat delicate pepper, I use it at the table instead of adding it when cooking a dish. It seems to brighten every dish on which I've used it.

You can taste the difference
I use this pepper for my special recipes, the taste is just so much more. And the little tin canister can be used for so many things.
