Kwikset980 Single Cylinder Deadbolt featuring SmartKey® in Polished Brass

This is a great product. Just make sure that the seller doesn't try to send you 10-15 year old versions. Yes, it did happen to me. :rolleyes:I bought a new house with a LOT of outside doors and rather than have 8 (cheap) 20 year old deadbolts re-keyed and/or replaced, I decided to just replace all of them and re-key them myself. Even at 30something each, this was WAY cheaper than a locksmith and it let me do the installs at my own pace, fixing other stuff door related without having to have a locksmith a dozen different times.These are quality locks. Heavy, solid, well finished and super easy to install if all you're doing is replacing an existing deadbolt.They also fit in perfectly with my evil master plan to replace a couple of the deadbolt locks with HA smart locks. Being naturally contrary and in general paranoid where home/office security is related I did not want a keypad lock. Ok. The real reason was because I live in the desert and ALL keypads exposed directly to 365 days of desert sunlight fail in pretty short order. After doing tons of reading - including forum posts from my own locale - the longest lifespan I could find was 2 years - no matter the brand. No way was I jumping on that bandwagon of having to spend $600-900 every couple years to replace my door locks. ESPECIALLY since I had absolutely no use for a keypad in the first place.What I did want was a way to tell if the door(s) were locked/unlocked and lock or unlock them remotely - be that from upstairs or across the state. I don't allow random strangers to prance in and out of my home whenever so being able to unlock a door in an emergency for friend or relative when they show up would be perfect. No worry about keypads that won't work when you need them most or my older relatives having issues with cranky, unnecessary 'tech'. No smart lock I could find exceeded grade 2. Something else of note: Kwikset's LIFETIME MECHANICAL & FINISH WARRANTY on the 980. No one offers that on a POS keypad smart lock. Another benefit - absolutely no worry about being locked out of your home by a set of dead batteries.So, this has worked out perfectly on the couple of doors that that only see egress traffic anyway. Not that I care personally. I'm old school and don't have an issue using something as esoteric as a 'key'.I would definitely buy these again. Both the 980 and the smart conversion piece. I've had everything up and running for 5 months and everything works just like it did the day I installed them. All my 980s are still smooth as glass. Almost makes me wish I had more doors to do. :) :)

This is pretty brilliant. I was blown away about how quickly and easily I could rekey the lock to match the key used throughout the rest of the house. It couldn't be easier and I can't recommend this lock highly enough. It took quite literally less than a minute to get this setup how I wanted. It comes with the key reset tool, so no worries there. Operationally, it works as well as any other lock. It has a nice solid throw and seems to be well made. If you're wondering what the easiest way to set your whole house up with a single key, this would be the way to do it.

This review is four years in the making. I bought three of these in January 2016. They were very easy to install. I love that I can rekey them as needed. Thank goodness I haven't had to. Another bonus is the look classed my entry up some.

We already have these locks installed in our house by our builder and I needed another for an outdoor shed door that I built myself. This is a very well-built lock set. My door was prehung with lock holes already drilled with the excetption of the door jam hole needing to be deeper and cleaned out for the reinforcing piece. It took maybe 15 minutes to clean that out and the lock works great. You do need a good drill and new sharp bit that can drive the long screws into the door jam and stud in the wall. Another nifty feature is that this is a rekeyable lock and in a minute I can make it work with the key for our house. But for now, we leave it keyed differently because we have a gardener who needs to be in the shed and I don't want them having the key to the whole house.

So far so good. Very easy to install, uses same keys as any traditional Kwickset lock and you can even use the same outside hardware (just swapping out the cylinder) if you like. The "programming" aspect worked first time and very easily- It is a convenient feature, although I doubt I will need it much.I specifically bought this lock because it is extremely difficult to pick and impossible to "bump" (both of which are easy on older Kwickset models). Unfortunately, there is credible info about Smartkey locks being defeated by brute force with a special tool (and it would be 5 stars if not for that fact). But there doesn't appear to be anything else out there that is better (for under $150). The price is fantastic and it is still more secure than my old Kwikset locks, so it was worth swapping to these until something better comes along.

This looks and works great. One note: This is not a trim match for the standard Kwikset brass lockset, even though the smartkey function worked great and one key opens both locks. Note the brass housing in the picture is not smooth, but more ornate. Just a style point. No complaints, and the price was great. Item was as new and installed in 15 minutes.

I waited over a year to review this lock to give an accurate overview. I followed the detailed instructions to rekey the lock to with no problems and found it was surprisingly easy to do. I have been using the lock now for over a year without a hitch. The easy re-keying feature and durablity are real pluses for this lock. I'm pleased with every aspect of this product and can highly recommend it.

Purchased for my rear doors to match the new handle set on the front door. The SmartKey is awesome. We use them on all our new construction homes so we can key to a job key and give the unique key back to the homeowners at closing. No one ever has their keys. I throw them all in a bag and grab them at random for closing. Biggest thing is to make sure you keep the key in the lock all the way and fully cycle the key both ways to make sure it learns the new key. They also make a tool to reset the cylinder if you brick it.

Great quality locks and easy to install. The re-key feature is very nice and quick
