These are the older model - get the newer ones.
This is the older "Tot-Loc" model of the Safety First magnetic locks. The installation for these is much more involved than it is for the newer models. This kind requires drilling a hole using a 9/32" bit halfway through the back of each cabinet door to fit the magnets for the lock, while the newer ones have better magnets and only need drilling for the screws. Another change is you can adjust the position of the newer ones after you install them by loosening the screws and sliding the lock where you need. This model doesn't have that feature, so you have to get it measured just right the first time. The other big difference is the key. The new key is smaller (and therefore easier to misplace) but has a hole so it can be hung up on a hook.If you don't mind the installation, then either model will work for you. They're both much more secure than the simple latches that fit over the knobs or that push down after the cabinet is partially opened. My only complaint about these is that they only come with one key. If you're installing more than a few locks, I'd suggest buying more of the smaller packs than one big pack, that way you'll have more keys.Other installation tips for this model: the instructions don't say anything about pre-drilling holes for the screws. That's fine for softer woods, but for hardwood cabinets I recommend using a 5/64" bit to get the holes started. Drill the big hole first, then fit the lock in and use it as a guide to drill the pilot holes. If you don't have a 9/32" bit for the big hole, you can use a 1/4" bit and wiggle it around a bit to get some slack. The magnets are exactly 1/4" wide. Just be careful and don't drill too deep as the guide they provide won't fit on the 1/4" bit.

Disappointed -- have they changed these?
I used these almost twenty years ago to cat-proof some of my cabinets. So when I recently had to secure some more cabinets, I instantly thought of this product -- I had been very very pleased the first time around. Easy to install, worked beautifully.I was very disappointed. For a number of reasons.1) When I bought them nearly two decades ago, the directions were so explicit, detailed, and repetitive that it was almost funny. I seriously considered the idea that they may have been that extremely simple, step by step, and redundant because the company felt a lot of grandparents might be buying them because of the grandchildren, and they suspected that the older folks perhaps could use a bit of hand holding.Well, that has changed. For the worse. Much worse -- the directions are now on a small slip of paper with drawings so tiny and so cramped that they were nearly impossible to follow. I actually gave up on them, which resulted in my having to redo the job half way through, because I had missed something. I strongly recommend that you do not bother with the instructions as received, but rather follow the much better -- and more easily read -- instructions you can find online by searching for "Tot Lok installation instructions". There are also YouTube videos.2) I would have greatly benefited by a stronger magnet. In fact the magnets I have from that ancient install, nearly two decades ago, work better than the one that came with the order. You can use any other magnet (but note that those magnets which come in metal holders may or may not work, depending on whether the magnet's north pole or south pole is the exposed one).3) Frustration guaranteed packaging. Clamshell package, shears or other serious cutting tool required. And when you do get it open, all the hardware -- screws and small parts -- will fall out.in the end they do work -- although you may have to hold the magnet j u s t . r i g h t -- but for me they did not live up to my expectations based on my previous experience

Works for any age!
Fabulous! I have a 7 year old with special needs who now thinks it's amusing to break my glasses and glass bowls on our tile floor. Most latches he could open it 2 seconds but not these. They've been on for a week now - success! Tip - when drilling into the cabinet, measure the thickness of your cabinet and subtract 1/8" as directed (or even more than 1/8" to start). Put a piece of painters tape over the drill bit that exposes only that measured distance of the bit. When drilling, you can clearly see the tape while the bit is spinning so you can stop drilling before accidentally drilling all the way through your cabinet. When the painter's tape reaches the cabinet, or just before, stop drilling. Also, the drill bit size recommended is not a common size so you can use the next size smaller and just wiggle it around a bit to make the hole wide enough.

Great cabinet latches for kid-proofing!
Used to kid-proof our kitchen cabinets, and I love them.Installation:Putting these in is very easy. All you really need is a drill and a screwdriver. The little stick-on templates that come with the kit work perfectly and make sure the latch and catch are aligned. Follow the directions and everything lines up great. After I got the hang of it, it probably only took 5 minutes a cabinet to finish. There are multiple pieces in the kit to ensure that these will work no matter how thick your cabinet doors are. I had to use the short insert for the doors, and they work great.Use:First off, they succeed in keeping my 1-year-old from getting into the cabinets. The main reason I wanted this type of lock is that there is zero play in the door unless you use the magnet to open it. So no little fingers getting smashed, and no little arms reaching into the gaps. Plus it is fun watching your wife try to find where you put the magnets in the cabinets for the first time. There is an audible click that lets you know you've hit the right spot, and after a few weeks we just know where each lock is on the cabinets. There is also a little latch on the lock that basically holds it open, so you can disable the locks as needed.Make sure you get an extra magnet, or buy two packs. We haven't found another magnet in the house yet that will also open the cabinets. The easy part is that we just keep the lock magnets on the fridge and we haven't lost one...yet. I definitely recommend these.

the actual product itself works brilliantly. No more eye/hook or complicated locking mechanisms
It's ok. It comes in seemingly 10,000 tiny pieces that you need tiny hands and tiny screwdrivers to piece together. Once you get over the assembly, the actual product itself works brilliantly. No more eye/hook or complicated locking mechanisms. This uses a powerful yet simple magnet system to keep doors locked. Comes with magnetic "keys" to enable/disable the locks. Works simply and effectively. Just the setup/install is a mess of tiny parts and a bit cumbersome.

As they are plastic they can be broken fairly easily by adults that forget that they are there
These locks work but require a significant amount of preparation and some damage to the door or drawer. As they are plastic they can be broken fairly easily by adults that forget that they are there. When installing make sure you use the screws provided as ones with larger heads can press on the plastic and prevent the lock from retracting properly.

These are GREAT!
These are great! My husband installed them on our cabinets in our living room to keep the kids out of the dvds and other items. They work like a charm. The only downfall would be when the magnet goes missing- it is hard to find another one as strong to move the clip. All in all I am a very happy camper about this purchase!

Excellent produit.
Difficile et long à poser mais fonctionne parfaitement quand la pose est bien accomplie.

Use the guage to install
Worked as described. Definitely use the drill guage or you'll mar your cabinets. Also pictures of how it works in varying cupboard styles would help. Doesn't work everywhere.
