World War II: Infographics

A new way to look at the Second World War...
We are now 75 years on from the end of the Second World War, and the conflict is rapidly passing out of human experience. Fortunately, the authors of this innovative book have found some clever ways to communicate the dimensions of the war. Perhaps just as important, those ways may appeal to more recent generations who find traditional history books hopelessly stuffy and longwinded. The infographics of the title are just that, ways to provide graphic relational information on the Second World War. For example, the end pages show the relative size of a variety of vehicles, planes and small vessels in use during the war, something one might not get from photographs. The book covers a useful variety of topics, not least about the relative scale of the cost of the war and the casualties. While this might not replace traditional narratives, infographics are certainly a useful addition. Well recommended.

Captivating book, awesome visuals
This book is a mind blowing and gorgeous representation of the world at war. While some colors are hard to distinguish from other colors, and some of the graphics are incredibly intricate, overall this book is absolutely captivating. Would highly recommend to anyone who is into history or graphic design. This book would make an awesome gift.

Interesting But Difficult
Lots of Information here, may different types of visualizations use many non standard and are not all are intuitive. take a lot of review and thinking to try and understand exactly what is the Story and message is. Some Work some Don't. I certainly do not this that this should be used as the Epitome of Data Visualization Excellence. Edward Tufte Would have a Field day as the Artist seems to delight in going out of his way to violate his Guidance, for example gratuitous use of faux 3d (see Page 33 Charts in section 2 and 3) the First Charts Section 1 on Page 1 I am Still trying to decipher and Understand. Chart Junk - See Rommel’s face on Page 100. Shades of Minard’s napoleon Campaign on page 108-109 which I thought was Quite Effective.I found one Mistake on page 67 where it Indicates that there were 2 Ships of the Hood Class. (Would have been Nice), but then the selection of ships in this Section seems Purely Arbitrary and not Complete (no Bismarck, No KGV, No QE etc.) Why Choose an Unmodernised British Battlecruiser from 1918 as The Representative of RN Battleships is Puzzling.this Book also Suffers from the same complaint I have of a lot of Visualization Books where they Split Graphics across the fold of the Spine making them Impossible to reads. (seed map on Page 80). this one is bad because simply moving the section 1 to the right hand page would have allowed the Map the be Displayed full on the left. Oh well.My last Complaint of this one is the exclusive use of colors of many very Similar Shades to identify the Participants Which I personally Found very Difficult to Correlate between the Legends and the Infor Graphic - See pages 22 -23 for an Example . (I know that some Clever person will tell me that you can identify the Australian Infographic Soldier by his slouch hat! Amazing Detail that is Hard to decipher -I am Still trying to Identify the Difference Between the British Canadians and New Zealanders)All this being said I think Its a remarkable work and worth the money
