Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Vol. 5: Worst Among Equals (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016-2019)) Kindle & comiXology

One of the best volumes yet with a fantastic, almost third wall breaking, addressing of the weaknesses of vol.4. The story itself is great and continues to explore questions of morality, selflessness, and self preservation. The art and writing are also on top form here.My only complaint is that the story seems to winding up towards an ending to the Doctor Aphra series. Which if true is very sad :(

Forget all the other Star Wars characters, their days are numbered.Doctor Aphra is the single most interesting character to ever appear in a Star Wars comic. And vol 6 is the best so far.

“Doctor Aphra – Worst Among Equals” collects Annual #2 and the regular issues #26-31.This is a spectacularly entertaining series which seems to exist in order to let British writers showcase their (black) comedy-writing talents, aided and abetted by superb artists of the ‘realistic’ school.This volume opens with an out-of continuity story in the Annual, which introduces a new pair of characters, who turn up later in this volume.The main plot sees Aphra and Trip(le-zero) on the run from, well, everyone, whilst being linked together by bombs in their heads with whatever the opposite of a proximity-fuse is (they have to stay within a certain distance). They are marooned on a black-comedy planet straight out of 2000 AD (the comic), and, like so many recent adventures, probably based loosely on a film-plot.The real story, however, is a deep, searching study of the characters and internal drives of Aphra and Trip(le-zero), with a resolution too. As far as I know, these characters were made up by Marvel, but, like the recent Darth Vader series by Kieron Gillen, they have been given more than just a shallow comic-book set of characteristics.This really is a better comic than the film universe deserves. If we all hold hands and make a wish, maybe Disney will hand the franchise over to Marvel Studios when they finally get the last trilogy finished…
