SVS SB12-NSD vs Polk PSW10
I bought the Polk PSW10 subwoofer first, and was so impressed with what $90 got me that I wanted to see what a $500 subwoofer could do from a big shot name brand company. I was expecting to be blown away. Not so. After a week of breaking in, I wired both so I could switch between both at will to compare several bass-heavy songs and movies. Of course the SVS could reach a little lower and into the feel-able 15Hz range, but I don’t really count that since it’s also 2” larger over the Polk. I was really after the tightness of the bass, anyway, which is why I specifically hunted for a sealed box subwoofer. For the tightness of the bass, I assign a 10-15% subjective improvement over the Polk, which essentially means it’s very difficult to tell unless rigging them in a side by side comparison test. And you’ll have to take my word for it that I don’t have dull or impaired hearing. Was the SVS better? Yes. Was it worth 5X the price? To me, not nearly.

Wow. Just Wow.
I am truly amazed by the value you get with this sub. I have this set up in a small 11'x10'x8' media room (a place to escape my wife's reality TV shows, LOL) with the L/C/R, TV, AVR and BD centered against the long wall with the sub in the left corner next to the FL tower and the base response is just amazing, very low and accurate and having a small room helps with getting the most of this sub.The first thing I tested this with was the first Transformers movie on BD, the opening scene with the chopper really impressed me with how detailed the helicopter blades were and I could feel small thumps in my chest with each blade rotation, that brought a little grin to my face. Then a little further along in the film when the first Decepticon transformed and started blowing up the base, my little grin turned into a huge smile and I felt like a little kid on Christmas listening to the accuracy of the explosions and the sonic booms. I knew then it was the best $399 I've ever spent and was floored that something this good was this low in price. My only regret was that I didn't buy 2 at the time because these all sold out on the SVS site about 3 days after I bought mine but I rectified that last week and picked up a second SB12-NSD from Amazon while these are still around for $399. I just now have to figure out the best placement in my media room to get all I can out of the dual setup. After I hooked up the 2nd sub and ran room correction on my Onkyo TX-RZ720 I noticed that my bass went from tight and accurate to more loud and boomy so I blame that on improper placement and it's time to do a sub crawl on where to best place the 2nd SB12-NSD as front stage to the inside of my tower speakers doesn't seem to be the best choice from what my ears are hearing but again, I don't blame the sub, I blame where I put it :)All I can say is, if you can still find these at this price and you're looking to use it in a smaller room, don't think about it, just hit the buy button because you won't regret it!

Made a $1500 pair of speakers sound like a $15,000 pair. It's a fantastic bargain.
About my listening tastes: I hate sloppy bass. That gong-like extended ringing of cheap subwoofers drives me up the walls. I also hate the sound of air moving through the port of a ported enclosure. I've heard that distracting sound called "chuffing," which is exactly what it sounds like. Since I hate chuffing and booming bass, I tend to avoid ported enclosures, except on the rare occasion that I find speakers which were somehow engineered around both of my pet peeves. So, when I saw the rave reviews about this subwoofer and noticed that it is a sealed enclosure, you can imagine I was pumped. To give you some context, I own a large pair of Polk RTI A9 tower speakers for music listening, which are ported but magically have tight bass and are free of the irritating chuffing port noise. I love the open, airy, accurate sound stage these speakers create. They are a dream to hear and match my sound preferences nearly perfectly. Only the deepest rumble of the sub 30Hz audio was missing from these amazing speakers. Unfortunately, Polk's subs aren't as well engineered as their speakers to my ears. They suffer from both of my pet peeves. While listening to the Polk subwoofers, I obsess over the booming and chuffing which keeps me from enjoying the music. As a result, I spent a long time researching other subwoofers before I bought one. I was zealously determined to avoid ported enclosures if possible. In my research, I saw SVS mentioned quite often as the best sealed enclosure subs. At the time, I believe this SB12-NSD was listed for $599. After a little more research, and making the decision to buy one, I checked the price here on Amazon. It was listed at $399!! The reason? A newer model with 100 more watts was coming. I admit I was already sold on it at $599 but the price drop removed all doubt. Ordered one and waited. The moment it arrived, I opened and installed it. I set my Denon to send everything below 60Hz to this gem. Then, I sat in my recliner, queued up my favorite music, and pressed play. When it started to play, my jaw dropped. I then spent the next few hours alternating between an ear to ear grin and goosebumps. There were parts of many of my favorite recordings that were so low in frequency, I had basically never heard them before. The bass was incredibly tight, yet extended to the bottom depths of my ability to hear. In fact, even frequencies below 20Hz seemed to be creating sensations throughout my skeletal system. Of course, I had to verify what I was hearing and feeling with a signal generator. Bottom line? It was true. This single speaker was producing useful sound levels down to below 15Hz. Granted, part of that was due to the smallish room and good placement, but wow! Best of all, the bass from this SVS was even tighter than my Polk towers. No boom at all. No chuffing (no port.) Just perfect, clean, low frequency sound. This subwoofer made my Polk towers sound even better, which I didn't believe was possible. This sub has to be the deal of the century. You will not find better sound from a sub for less than $2k from my research. In fact, I'd say the sound quality of this sub is probably only second to the top of the line subs from the same company. Great job SVS!! For fans of super tight bass, you are going to fall in love with this sub. Just buy it. Wow.
