Does it break the cereal or make lots of crumbs?

Good question and no it does not the Apple cinnamon cereal you see I have in one remains whole when dispensing

Will dog kibble work in it?

Helli this is for small foods such as cheerios and fruit loopps. Larger dry foods cpuld get criuhed during dispensing

Can i use this for protein powder

I have protein powders as well. I would not advise using this for powders of any type. The bottom closure is not an absolute tight closing dispenser. Even with the plug insert, you absolutely WILL end up with powder leaking out like an hour glass. No doubt.

Can this be used for rice?

Look at the photo someone submitted. It isn't used for rice.
