Fun Record
This is the debut album from the first of the English punk bands to get signed to a major label, even though the Damned had the first product out with the New Rose EP on Stiff Records (barring various singles which preceded). This band is what I imagine Green Day wants to sound like (if they had any punk in their DNA -- OK I am trying to rile the Green Day fans, but they are just a power pop band) If you are familiar with The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks I think you could draw a line between those two bands and place the Vibrators (at least with this album) about 2/3 of the way towards The Buzzcocks end of that corresponding line. The Vibrators are a little less pop than The Buzzcocks (there is a little overlap with the popishness) and are a little less aggressive and less sloppy than The Sex Pistols, a little less sneer too. But still, that puts The Vibrators in pretty good company. This disc often finds its way into the car player where its frenetic beats make it hard to drive appropriate speeds. Decent sound quality too (for a 1977 punk record). Wish I had seen these guys back in the day. Oh and ignore the statement from the reviewer that claims the Vibrators are part of the second wave of English punk bands, these lads were there from the get go. Another reviewer complained about there being an anti-drug song (Keep It Clean) and how that's not punk. First off it seems to me the song is about dealing with vices period, not specifically an anti-drug song; and more importantly nothing could be more punk than going against the expected norms of your own idiom (meaning it makes perfect sense to mock yourselves, others, and associated behaviors of the "movement" to which you supposedly belong)

classic punk
Before punk was a genre it was a movement, and the movement was in London, and at the head of the movement was the Vibrators, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. And the movement was eclectic and exciting, so the marketing men tried to make it all sound the same so it would fit as a label on the record store shelves. Somehow in this process the Vibrators were forgotten but this is authentic punk, a pop rock sound so unlike the punk lite of Greenday that we have today."Whips and Furs" and "Baby Baby" are two of the best songs of the era and worth the price alone.
