Pretty Little Liars

The first time I'd heard of the Pretty Little Liars, I was watching a YouTube video; a makeup tutorial (no laughing please). And the girl in the video said before she started the tutorial she was "so excited she just got the 4th book of the Pretty Little Liars" for her Kindle. And the stated how good the books were. Now this wasn't coming for a little teenie bopper, this is from a makeup artist adult. So of course being a book nerd I had to look it up. I'm so glad I did. First thing caught my eye was the rating and then a I read the description. I was so excited to get this book and read it, it was something so new from what I normaly read. I ate this book up in 2 sittings. It's a classic who-did-it type of story that keeps you turning page after page until you get to the end just to find you, you still don't know who killed Ali or is Ali really dead. I had to tell everyone about this book and how good it was, the next night, I bought the 2nd book. I've now started 4th book in the series, I've bought Season one of the TV show and my husband and myself are hooked. We can't wait until Season 2 is available to buy, and I'll be getting the next book, and the next book, and the next. This writer is really good, don't think this is just some cheesy gossipy girl highschool drama teen book. Oh no! This is excellent for anyone looking for a page turning mystery that keeps you hooked. I'm eager to try the Lying Game by this same author and am hoping for the same kind of power this series has over me.

I enjoy the tv show a lot, but the books are so much better! When I started reading them I thought they would be childish like the show, but they are actually much more adult.. and surprising! If you like the show you will love the books, and once you read this one you will want to buy the next right away. I read the first 3 in about 2 weeks, and that's only because I had to balance it with my 5 week summer college class and full time job. Emily is my favorite character in this book. She is struggling with who she is, which makes her more realistic and interesting to me. I found Hanna unlikable and pathetic in this book, even though I adore her on the show (conceitedness aside). Aria - whoa maniac, chill out. She is way too obsessed with Ezra, it's kinda freaky. I felt sorry for Spencer. Her parents are harsh and she tries so hard for so little. Although the "mature" stuff like smoking, drinking, and designer clothes were added, these girls act way too young for their age sometimes. And their seduction techniques made me laugh they were so ridiculous. The events in the book are interesting, albeit unlikely, and it was a fun book to read. Probably the best in the series if I remember correctly.

Yes I gave Pretty Little Liars 5 stars. No, this novel is not in the same category as Shakespeare, but for what it is, it's great. I wanted to read the series after seeing ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars. The TV show does differ from the books. SPOILER ALERT! The premise: At the end of seventh grade, a clique of 5 girls was ruled by one of the girls, Allison. Allison is the classic "mean girl." The girls all had a secret referred to only as "the Jenna thing" which bonds them and keeps them close. Allison then disappears and the rest of the girls fall out of touch. It's now the beginning of junior year for them and they all start receiving mysterious texts from "A." The problem-A knows everything about them including secrets they don't want others to know. So, who is A? The characters: Aria-Having returned from being out of the country for 2 years, she meets the man of her dreams at a local bar. Only problem-he turns out to be her English teacher. Spencer-The typical over-achiever, Spencer is out to be the best-and to move out from underneath her perfect sister's shadow. One Emily-A competitive swimmer struggling to meet her parent's high expectations, Emily starts to become confused about what she wants including if that means she wants a boyfriend or girlfriend. Hanna-When Allison was here, Hanna was the "fat friend." Now, she's turned into Rosewood's "It" girl. Of course, she has her share of problems-a dad who she doesn't talk to anymore, a boyfriend who won't sleep with her, etc. Comparison to the TV show-I personally, even though I'm 30, think Pretty Little Liars is a great show. Very guilty pleasure! Well, I think the first novel was actually better than the TV show.

I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. It isn't bad. I did like it. I will probably continue reading the series. I picked it up because I'm a fan of the TV show, which is quite a bit farther along than just this book. It's interesting to see what has changed from book to TV. I don't think any of the main 4 characters look how they're described in the book, except for maybe Hanna. They toned down Aria's quirkiness, changed Emily's race (she's a freckly Irish girl in the books), and darkened Spencer's hair (I think she was a blonde in the book, but I've already forgotten). The characters also have more siblings in the books. Who knew that Emily had a sister who was also a swimmer? I kind of want to keep reading the series just so I can see what else has changed. Of course, the biggest change is when Ali's disappearance happened. In the TV show, it had only been a year since she went missing. In the book, it's been 4 years. They were just out of 7th grade when it happened. It really makes the distance between the 4 girls make more sense if it happened over the course of 4 years instead of just one year. Now, I know this is a young adult book. Target demographic is teenage girls. Clearly. But while I normally like YA literature, this one felt a bit... fake, or too commercial, or something. Commercial in that not a page went by without some sort of brand mention. It was a clothing label, or the kind of water they were drinking, or the car they were driving. It got tiring after a while. I can tell that I'm not used to reading books that rely so heavily on brand recognition for description. I know that part of it is to show how affulent these characters' families are, and to emphasise the wealthy neighborhood where they live. But I get it. It was just too much. I won't lie, I only decided to give this series a shot because I love the show so much. I had serious doubts as to whether I should risk the $7 on this book, but it turned out to be well worth it. I was honestly very surprised to see how well the show actually followed the plot line set forth in the book. They did an incredible job. That being said, if you've already watched the show and are debating whether or not to buy the book, I would definitely recommend it. There is still a lot that the book adds to the story that is not so obvious in the show. The story is exciting and intriguing and you won't want to put it down. I actually had to pace myself so that I wouldn't read it all in one day. Overall, well worth it. Can't wait to read the next one!

When I go on the search for a new book to read, I will probably read a small excerpt from quite a few before one feels right. That is how my experience has been with this particular series since the books started being released. It has never felt like the right time to begin it...until now, that is. After watching a recent interview of one of the girls who stars in the show, I finally decided to begin the first book. And I am glad that it was finally time to read it. First of all let me just say that this book pleasantly surprised me. Sometimes in a young adult book there can be an almost degrading juvenile nature to the story. It is almost like when an adult dumbs down a conversation when speaking to a small child. The sentences are oversimplified and it feels like the author doesn't respect the reader's intelligence enough to complicate things a bit. However, in this book, it had that high school feel without making it too simple. I greatly appreciate that. Now for the characters... I must say that my favorite one right now is A. While he or she is the main antagonist throughout the series, in this book I kind of felt like the girls deserved what taunting they did get. They were terrible in junior high and did some things for which they should definitely be remorseful. But I get that sometimes this taunting will go too far, and in a way it already has, and while I don't really condone that, A is still kind of an awesome character. I mean, I like the main girls, but A just has that aura of mystery I absolutely love. I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the series. I just have to know what other secrets and enemies lie in these girls pasts. And I'm kind of curious to see what else A has in store.

This book was recomended to me by my best friend. I was a little unsure about the book, so I waited a while before I actually bought the book. I bought it for a reasonable price on the Kindle Store, $8.99. Once I began reading the first page, I was instantly in love with the characters, author, and the story itself. Sara Shepard gives SUCH great detail on everything! I could picture everything she mentioned in her writing in my head. She has written a whole series on the "Pretty Little Liars" novel. I highly recomend you read anything written by her. The characters. Ah, the characters. I could relate them to my friends and others. Shepard gives each of the girl's point of view so you know what all the main characters are thinking and feeling. The story plays itself out beautifuly featuring everything a perfect story requires. It includes romance, drama, thrillers, cliff hangers, and plenty of suspense. I recomend you read this book only if you are 12 years old or older. Hope you read the book! :)

I read these in middle school and saw they’re on unlimited so I’m reading again!! I’ve always said the books are better than the show

I'm giving it 5 stars because its PLL but i have now found out that books 1-4 have been updated and "modernized". I personally was looking for some 2006 nostalgia and am not overly pleased with this change. Examples of things that tipped me off to it not being set in 2006: 1. Hanna and Mona discussing tiktok vs. Snapchat 2. Emily having a picture of Lili Reinhart in her locker (from tvs Riverdale which started in 2017, so she would have been a literal child in 2006) I have been told to only get the books with pictures of dolls on it now. 5 stars still but heads up about the cover pictures.
