My daughters favourite book
My daughter is a reluctant reader, but we picked this book up in the middle of last year and it has become a favourite. She has re-read it several times, and when she had to pick a book to donate for other kids her age this was top of her list.Don't be fooled by the layout, it is a clever read. I probably enjoyed it as much as she did. Highly recommended.

Brilliant books with beautiful illustrations
I’m one of those who usually don’t like to write a review unless to complain about a bad product. But the Ottoline books really impressed me so that I feel these books deserved to be praised about.I was looking for a chapter book to read to my 6 yo who can understand English quite well but it is not her main language. We tried other books like “the boys who grew dragons” and “Charlie and the chocolate factory” and they were a bit too complicated for her with slangs and expressions only English speaking person would understand. Ottoline books were the prefect level we needed plus there are so many beautiful and detailed illustrations that make the books and stories easier to understand. Would really recommend them to anyone whose kids are transgressing from storybooks with pictures to a longer chapter book.

A great series for new readers
One of our favourite things about this series of books are the intricate illustrations. There are detailed and humorous throughout the book and some even have clues for the case being solved by Ottoline in the story. They are great for nearly independent readers as there is such a mix of text with pictures.Ottoline lives in a big apartment in the city with her little hairy friend Mr Munroe. Her parents are away collecting interesting things but she receives regular postcards from them of their progress. In this story Ottoline is doing some more great detective work. With Mr Munroe's help she goes undercover to discover who is stealing the city's jewels and who is responsible for all the dog-napping! She has to take on the clever feline crook, the Yellow cat!A great little humorous adventure series. We will definitely be reading the others! The recommended reading age is 7-9 years (although my daughter is 6 and loved it!)

Requires some thinking but even if you don't dig into the details you can still enjoy the story 'on surface '
This was the second book from this series. When we had finished the first one and daughter have asked for another she literally kept staring at the window and kept asking when will the postman come! For 3days she hardly did anything but that! She likes books and going to the library, but this book was a hit. My 5yo is absolutely taken by this book. Simply made yet very busy detailed pictures. Loads of tiny hidden clues to match the story. Requires some thinking but even if you don't dig into the details you can still enjoy the story 'on surface '. So really good story for various ages I'd say. I think the older the child the more details and twists in the story they can spot. It's defo one of the best books I've seen. Oh, and each book contains some small gift relevant to the story. A-ma-zing!

A wonderful, original gem of a book, surely a future classic
I knew Chris Russell from some of his other children's books, but gave Ottoline to my 6 year old daughter on the recommendation of my 12 year old son who had read it at school. It's a delightful, gem of a book - as are the other 2 Ottoline books which follow it.This is the story of Ottoline who lives in the fascinating Big City in the States. Her parents are explorers so our only contact with them in the book is via the postcards they send to her. She lives with the short and hairy Mr Munroe - a highly original character, who looks rather like Captain Caveman if you can remember him! Mr Munroe was found by her parents in a mud swamp somewhere in Norway and now seems to be her nanny. He doesn't speak but his character and foibles shine through brilliantly. There are all sorts of astounding people employed by her parents to look after Ottoline - the bed makers, the light bulb changers, etc, which creates a wonderful fantasy world for children of a child with complete freedom who is nevertheless thoroughly looked after. In this story, Ottoline and Mr Munroe are hot on the trail of a crime gang led by the mysterious Yellow Cat responsible for various dog mappings and jewel thefts. It's great fun spotting all the clues - my daughter was on the edge of her seat. What I found particularly brilliant was that this is one of those rare books that a relatively competent young reader can read to themselves but that is also hugely enjoyable to read to them - there is much in it for older children and adults alike in terms of all the jokes and quirks. It is also beautifully illustrated in the most wonderful detail (we spent hours looking at the layout of Ottoline's house and spotting all the different things put in it).I have started giving it to my daughter's friends as my 'standard' birthday present now, and I've had several comments from other parents as to how much both they and their children enjoyed it. If only there were more in the series!

A great book for kids
Bought as it was part of my daughter's English study during lockdown and was easier for her to read from a physical hard copy rather than the online PDFs uploaded by the school.Entertaining and enjoyable, so much so my 8-year-old had read it three times in the few short weeks since purchasing. Charming and delightful illustrations throughout.
