I Almost Forgot About You: A Novel

McMillan hits the bullseye!
This book, the content, and the characters were so relevant for me, makes me know the universe is not filled with coincidence. Just being a black female in my 50s, having what appears to be success but lacking in true fulfilling intimate relationships, I chose this book on Prime Day for I needed something to distract the weightiness of another failed marriage, while being a working healthcare professional, wife, and mother, I had given up even the indulgences of reading for pleasure. This has lifted me more than words can say. I know it's a fictional novel, but the mere possibilities that it gives me is invaluable right now.

Mid-Life Makeover!
I loved this one! I must say I’m already a Terry McMillan fan, but this novel did not disappoint. As a fellow 50+ member, I embrace the idea that we’re never too old to start over, find love (or fan the embers of an old flame), forgive, heal and reinvent ourselves. Here’s to embracing all that we are, and can still be, as we start our next chapter, or volume - LOL! And to quote from the story…”INNW - If Not Now, When?!” Start today 🧡

This book resonates with what I’m going through in my life so I really enjoyed it. I hope my ending is parallel with Georgia’s.

not bad/not what we've come to expect
TM fans want to love her novels. in earlier novels, we could see ourselves. it felt like back when we could high five oprah. we could relate to the oprah that struggled w a few extra pounds and a career in a field where she was a minority. as time passed.her struggles and ours are on different planets. could it be that TM has a lot less in common w her earlier audience? though i'm liking the novel, it's not one that was easy to get into or one that's at all difficult to put down. i'm a registered readaholic, i don't put books down. with this novel, i read one chap. per day. ` i read the reviews and i got the novel anyway. the slow start turned many off, including me. i was struggling to figure out why i couldn't get excited about this novel. i've concluded that these characters' lives are not relative to me or mine. it seems that these ladies, their husbands and children have so much to be thankful for, yet they're fishing for reasons to explain why they are not over the moon with joy and contentment. they're struggling w being over 50 and not having a handsome, sexy date who's not an "over achiever"/doctor/lawyer/engineer. many readers may be thinking, "where are these guys"? the character struggles w adult, educated, married children who're confronting the reality that life is not perfect and neither are boyfriends or husbands. i think there's a tiny disconnect fr an audience, whose kids may not have the luxury of skipping fr one college or course of study to the next. there are not so many guest houses where our kids can crash, if they mess up. some are lucky to have a finished basement. and selling my home and hunting down old flames, to see why we couldn't make it. hell no!! i can work that out in my home and in my head. most of us have done it already, learned fr it and moved on, trying not to make the same mistakes w the next man. a fantasy train ride alone, sounds nice...but i've read a ton of novels and seen a bundle of movies w characters whose lives are nothing like my own. i've enjoyed them and loved having a peep into other ppl's worlds. i think when we all fell in love w TM's novels, it was because we could see ourselves, our families, our friends walk in the shoes of her characters. it was hard to find our stories outside slavery or jimcrow. she's one who's novels showed a more contemporary "sister" who had evolved beyond those things. maybe the author's path has taken her so far up the road, it's getting more and more diff. for us to stay in touch. we might have to drop our old expectations when we pick up her books. or she might have to find out what regular achievers are experiencing nowadays.,

One woman and her search for love again after two failed marriages
I love the details. The characters are fully fledged. They are interesting on their own. A mark of a master word crafter. I enjoyed the unpredictability of the story.

Boring and Predictable.
This must be the worst novel from Terry McMilan that I have read. The story, based around a woman who is bored with her job as an Optemetrist is so far fetched it beggers belief. To re-boot her life she wonders what has become of past flames/husbands and starts to track them down which runs counter to her desire to give up her job and release her creative urges in the form of furniture restoration. Yawn. The most interesting characters are her mother and sister who have more personality than her and the many ex boyfriends and husbands put together. It is a predictable and boring novel and I found myself skipping 10 or so pages at a time and even then I could not finish it!It certainly does not live up to her previous novels, especially a Day Late and a Dollar Short and has probably put me off buying another of her books ever again.
