The duke needs to hang up his spurs
Big John Wayne swaps his horse and spurs for a Ford Pontiac as he tries to emulate the younger stars as they transition into cop thrillers. While this movie is entertaining and all about a police officer, played by Wayne, battling corruption in the police department, Mister Wayne looks too old to be playing the character and, in some instances, looks to be struggling. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good police thriller, but I feel that Wayne should've passed on this. I just feel that the star should've left this type of movie alone and let the younger stars like Eastwood and McQueen take over the proverbial reigns. One for die hard John Wayne fans only, sadly. He also did another thriller set in London called 'Brannigan'.

McQ - DVD (THE JOHN WAYNE COLLECTION)
"Brannigan" came off as a fairly enjoyable fun film. This one is deadly serious, and, for me, still hard to accept Wayne as a "Dirty Harry" type. He is bigger than anyone else in the cast, but looks just 10 years too old. However, the plot is good. Sturges' direction is spot on, even the extended, obligitory car chases. The cast, especially Muldaur and Lettieri are excellent. Unless you know the plot there are surprises. I enjoyed it, perhaps not quite as much as "Brannigan" but it still stands up as a cop thriller regardless of what you think of Wayne without his horse. (Oh and Coleen Dewhurst sparkles (literallY) and Clu Gulager mumbles his way through his Jimmy Stewart impersonation.) The DVD is excellent quality, picture sound and subtitles all good. Extras not seen by me.

Not as good as I remember!
For me, apart from a couple of chase scenes this film is pretty poor now. One slight twist that's about all. Not aways wise to re-visit old memories. Certainly not worth £10.
