Armageddon's Arrow (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Exploration Again!
It was nice to once again boldly go with Captain Picard on a mission of exploration. This story is set after Star Trek: Nemesis. Worf is now "Number One" and LaForge 2nd in command. But we are Riker, Troi (who are now married and have a son) and of course Data. But, Mr. Ward has added a number of new characters to fill the void. I hope that he and other ST writers chose to continue to flesh them out. One of my personal favorites is T’ryssa Chen from engineering. The first two chapters, setting up the ensuing story, do move a bit slowly and possibly could have been a bit more condensed. But, not enough to dock this book a star. However, the tempo picks up when the crew of the Enterprise E comes upon a massive alien ship that has traveled through time, hell bent on destruction. As the story unfolds, the ongoing war sucks the Enterprise and her crew into the middle of the conflict. Each side seemingly reasonable, is caught in a war that they don't know how to stop. Can Picard mediate a lasting peace? Can the Enterprise E withstand this doomsday ship's horrific weapon? Dayton Ward answers these questions and delves into the way of war on a page turning ride. He knows well the voices of the older established characters and makes you want to know even more about the new. And, he can hold his own with any of the Star Trek writers when it comes to penning exciting actions scenes. You won't be disappointed.

Star Trek novels are getting back on course to the spirit of Star Trek, finally
Looks like the Star Trek novels are FINALLY getting back to Star Trek's original mission and spirit--to seek out new life and new civilizations, instead of the politically charged crap they've been churning out the last several years. ST TNG Armageddon's Arrow is a step in the right direction. You have two new species in the same solar system to meet, a doomsday weapon and a little time travel stuff thrown in to make for a good story. It's still a little political but it does so in a Star Trek consistent way. My only complaint was in wanting to know more about the two species they encounter. The focus is on their conflict and the doomsday weapon so much you really don't learn a whole lot about them. Also, Star Trek seems to be stuck in basically rewriting the bad alien with a big gun going to blow up some world story line though arguably in a creative way this time--pretty much the base storyline for every ST movie since the original series movies. I wanna know more about different species and space anomalies and stuff like that!

Engaging Story
I really found this story enjoyable. It had the right amount of dramatic tension and action. If it lacked anything at all it would be character development of some of the new aliens but otherwise a good read.

Arrow?
The book was wordy to the point of pointlessness. It could have used some editing. Often there were many paragraphs where a couple of sentences could suffice. The book repeated the same lines a few times like they were trying to stretch out the length. There are many inconsistencies that were never explained. What's up with the time travel and the author instead of answering that question takes the lazy way out is saying that's classified for the DTI and we don't need to know? Really? Also there are many paradox that are not explained. How can something ever exist if it was destroyed in the past? They author leave that big fat hole in the story. The book is just lazy, sloppy and sometimes boring. It is like reading a dictionary with some plot.

Fun adventure
A very solid read that stalls a bit at the end but is well worth a read! It features a few fun twists and turns and is a solid addition to the Litverse!

Good, classic, stand alone Trek
Armageddon's Arrow is classic Trek. It has the threat of war, time travel and moral conflict. The story is interesting and entertaining. This won't go down as great Trek and its not starting a new multi part series. Its just a solid, enjoyable, well constructed science fiction tale that continues the adventures of Picard and the Enterprise E. The characters are recognizable and it feels like Star Trek. It Also works as a stand alone novel.I like the direction Dayton Ward took the Enterprise in this novel. Hopefully we get many more novels like this one.

This is one of those novels that would make a good movie. It's a return to the exploration mission of Starfleet. The characters are well developed and the author has a practiced knowledge of the main characters and their expected interactions. The main focus of this novel is from the original series and is quite unexpected. The TNG characters get a chance to soar and the new members of the Enterprise E that have been added in the literary realm get a spotlight as well. This story is everything I have come to expect from a true TNG fan/writer. The excitement is back, the suspense is back, and I truly look forward to more novels like this from Dayton Ward.

Star Trek: THe Next Generation - Armageddon`s Arrow
It`s a good TNG story, despite the fact the 'abandoned alien ship' theme is becoming a little boring. The conection with a classic TOS episode is a welcome surprise!

Badly edited badly written
Sections seem to be missing as the characters react to events not written down. The shipvfrom the future has information about the federation and the enterprise in particular yet the people on the ship have never heard nor seen them and think its not possible to leave their solar system fast enogj to get elsewhere fast enough. How do species with that limited aviewpoint havs weapons that can hurt faederation ships anyway?

expanding
This is a solid next gen story that maintains all the continuity from the previous books and crossovers - which is essential for me. It's good to read Picard, Crusher, Worf and LaForge are the steady hands whilst training a new crew, lots of good banter between all characters and spoken with a lot less sterility than the tv show - which fits in well.

Fine addition. I've always preferred stories that expand upon existing characters or story developments within the canon, and while this did contain a small example of that, it was mostly original in plot. Nothing wrong with that of course, just not my preference. Still worth a read.
