Astonishing!
Not what I expected at all! What a crazy adventure his life has been! As a mom I was actually yelling at the book when he was making bad choices. I'm glad he used that energy to produce a positive outcome and some really amazing food! I cant wait to read Part 2 in another 10-20 years!

this book is another tool for me to learn more about the difficulties blacks face because of their skin color and the history of oppression. incredible writing that tells the story of passion, culture, love, family and hard work that helps kwame discover the essence of who he is and the food he needs to cook to express it. thank you for writing this book and sharing your story - i did not want to put it down!

A Fascinating Culinary Journey
I admit that I took a leap of faith when I pre-ordered this kindlebook that is Notes From A Young Black Chef A Memoir by Kwame Onwuachi with Joshua David Stein on August 13, 2018. Kwame Onwuachi goes into extensive detail to describe how his family life indirectly and directly shaped his interest in being a chef, his experiences of opening up a restaurant in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area, the author’s candid retelling of the dynamics between each of his parents, how his mother’s catering business shaped him, some details on his social life in both his earlier years and later years, and more. I admit that one of the reasons why this kindlebook appealed to me was from the indirect/subconscious influence of my current job even with me being aware when I pre-ordered the kindlebook that it appeared to be more geared towards a chef andor cook. Even obtaining and working in certain cook positions is highly competitive where I currently work at/where I’m currently employed at and I am glad to have obtained this kindlebook to at least increase my awareness of what some cooks and chefs to in certain settings do.

A quick and enjoyable summer read!
The author(s) of this story write in a very enjoyable style as they tell Kwame's story of successes and failures throughout his life. I think this book clearly illustrates how telling people that "anyone can make it if they just try hard enough" sounds good, looks good on paper, but doesn't always work out for everyone. The book gives the impression of Kwame having a winning spirit, one that will eventually pay off in multiple ways. I would recommend this book to anyone, and despite having called it an "enjoyable read" I found that it gave me a lot to think about, too.

This is not a cookbook.
This is a memoir with a few recipes in it, but it is not a cookbook. The memoir is a fascinating homage to Kwame’s family, life, travels, heritage, and food. I think Kwame comes off as arrogant at times, but never without justification. He also comes off as angry sometimes, but also never without justification. This book is not a “rags to riches” story with a perfect hero. It is a “human struggle” story with a human hero. I LOVED it.

There's more than cooking going on in this book
A must read! This isn't just about cooking. It is an awesome coming of age story about a very intelligent, street wise kid. Kuwame just happens to be a chef. There are a few good recipes sprinkled throughout the book. It's a tale of wins and losses. It gives readers insight into the racism that young black chefs must endure in the world's best kitchens. I was so engaged that I read the book in a few days.I can't wait to be able to travel to DC and dine at Kith/Kin.
