Will this work well to clean the carpet in a space that is appr 500 sq ft?

PLEASE ALLOW ME TO ALLAY ANY FEARS YOU MIGHT HAVE....
Yes!!!  You are going to be perfectly able to clean ANY size home / apartment with this outstanding cleaner, but you must have some understanding regarding this and all units like this!

First, be sure you have REALISTIC expectations.  If you're in desperate need of professional level steam cleaning, then do yourself a favor and hire the job done by a local company such as Stanley Steamer or whomever is highly rated because they will come in and move every piece of furniture, truly steam out all the  dirt and grime and replace the furnishings....raised up on little blocks of water proof high density foam or wood that will not stain the carpet while everything dries.  All you'll do is remove the blocks once your space(s) are dry.

If you have general traffic stains from foot traffic, perhaps a pet stain or three and nothing extreme, such as motor oil or cooking grease, then you'll be ABSOLUTELY FINE with this machine provided you do a few things and NEVER attempt to rush the process--which will only result in your dissatisfaction with the end results.

Second, the things I want to specifically mention regarding using this machine:  ALWAYS use the proper cleaning solution.  Do not use dish detergent or anything not 100% intended for upright cleaners of this type or you will end up with a sudsy mess that is a nightmare and almost impossible to clean up.  This Bissell cleaning solution (I use the 4x Pro all the time and LOVE the stuff) is precisely what the machine was designed to use--so my advice, use it!  Besides, search the web, YouTube etc and you'll find numerous "competitions" between brands, concentrations etc., and BISSELL IS ALWAYS ON TOP in all the subjective tests.

Third, take your time and do not start the project unless you're rested and prepared to sweat a bit because this process requires a true investment of your time, effort and of course a few bucks in cleaning solution (which goes a long way), water & some electricity.  ALWAYS use the hottest possible tap water in the clean washer tank, and if your water is EXCEPTIONALLY hard, consider using the LEAST expensive deionized / distilled water you can purchase from your local store and heat it to no more than 160°F in your microwave before adding it to the clean water tank.  This, along with the correct cleaning solution, will do 90% of the work for you!!   Go slow, make multiple passes over heavily soiled areas, the prepared to refill & empty dirty water often.  Use box fans or turn ceiling fans on high and turn down AC for a bit to extract moisture from the freshly cleaned spaces.

Last but not least, NEVER put your machine away dirty!  Never!  Always thoroughly rinse every part that comes off the machine by design.  If any thread, pet fur or similar fuzz is tangled in the scrub rollers, be sure to cut it away with scissors or pull it out with tweezers etc.  Wrap the cord correctly and keep all the accessories with the machine so next time you need it for a QUICK TOUCH-UP, then it's all there, ready to go and you won't have to worry about the machine working less efficiently or effectively than it was designed to or than it did the first time outta the box!

Does it function without the handle tilted back? I want to clean my stairs with it, so that's how I imagine I would hold it.

Where do you put the pre treater

There are 2 containers that pop out. One in the back that holds water (I use hot water) and the cleaning solution and one in the front that will need emptying when you use the machine. Pretty easy to do and works well. Happy cleaning! 👍😊
