Kyjen Outward Hound The Quick Release Dog BackPack (Assorted, Medium)

Have owned it for several months now and taken it out a couple times for hikes. My dog is a 75lbs shepherd mix who is pretty stout at the chest, with some adjustment to harness it fits perfectly and she has no problems with it. She actually likes it quite a bit and seems to feel important while wearing it haha. Not to mention she gets lots of compliments while wearing it (it is pretty cute with the bright color). Now that being said it does have some flaws. It does list heavily to one side unless you take care to perfectly balance the weight in both sides. Try matching water bottles on both side and try to keep their levels pretty close while using it. Also I wouldn't try to lift or hold a heavy dog by the handle. Or attach your leash to the harness itself, it is just not strong enough to be trusted like that. While climbing I grabbed the handle to help lift her while she climbed a large rock and immediately heard a tearing sound. I don't see any damage and I'll still use the pack. It works great to help her burn energy and keep my hands water bottle free. So for me I think it was worth the price even with its limits. Update: I've now owned this backpack for several years and still use it for every hike! I now own two more dogs and the backpack fits all of them with adjustments. The smallest dog is probably about 55-60lbs. She's a fairly small female pitbull mix with a broad chest. It also fits well on my athletic male Labrador who weighs about 70lbs, but has a much taller more slender frame than my two girls. It's held up well through the years and all 3 dogs have no problem with it. It actually seems to help my timid rescue dog's confidence when she wears it. Definitely worth the money!

I purchased this on a recommendation from my dog trainer. I use it as a weighted vest for my 60 lb Siberian husky. PROS: The product is high quality and very durable. It has withstood over a month of my graceful husky rolling around on pavement, crashing through bushes, and slamming himself into tree trunks. Using the backpack as a weighted vest to wear out my working breed, I fit 2 water bottles in each side pocket for his daily walks, and I still have room to store a flashlight and a few potty bags. If I were not using it as a weighted vest, the pockets would offer plenty of room. (However, I'd be hesitant to strap any of my valuables to a savage beast of the wilderness. Do so at your own risk.) The handle is a helpful added feature. I use it to have better control of Cujo when approaching innocent civilians in high traffic areas. Strapping the backpack on and taking it off is surprisingly easy, even while wrestling a wild, thrashing husky monster. To put it on, I leave the front buckle closed and slip the backpack over his head, leaving only the waist buckle for me to slip through the loop and connect. CONS: I subtracted 1 star, as the adjustable straps don't quite fit him in either the small or medium size. His breed has a very narrow waist and broad shoulders. My trainer had the small one which didn't expand far enough in the shoulders, so I purchased the medium which fits the shoulders properly but cannot adjust small enough to conform to his waist. As a result of the loose waist, the backpack tends to tilt to one side on his body. I adjust it a few times during the walk, so it's only a minor inconvenience. I'll probably make an alteration to shorten the waist strap in the near future.

Well made with nice features, adjustable fit, expandable pockets, no catch zippers, reflective finish, and lightweight. You can tell thought was put into the design, like little Velcro pieces that keep the straps tight against the corresponding strap so nothing hangs. Keep in mind (it doesn't fit so snugly that it would be comfortable for many miles on all dogs but it's great for the occasional hike under 10 miles. It is NOT waterproof or especially water repellent. The fabric is designed to be breathable. My biggest concern was sizing because my pitbull mix has a thick center and neck. He measured in the extra large (19" neck and 32" chest) but I decided to give the large a try and it fits great. There's actually extra space, so I was relieved. You can see how it fits in the photos. There are some gaps along the outside that are noticeable on my dog because he has very short hair. It can tip toward one side or the other sometimes if the weight is off, so just keep that in mind. Don't put anything too fragile on the outside as your dog will likely run into things with the side pockets as they adjust to being wider. My dog is pretty good on a leash but this actually worked better than a collar for getting him to keep walking instead of stopping to smell things every 2 seconds. The last strap works almost like a least wrap behind their rib cage.

We have a large German Shepherd dog named, X. (Find him on Facebook @ X, The German) We bought this pack for him thinking it's about time he started carrying his own weight. This pack fits everything he needs, which includes 2-4 bottles of water, dog food, his collapsible food/water bowl, and some dookie bags. (The expandable pockets are a big plus!) We would put his medical kit in his pack too, but we're taking it a few steps at a time. We have used this pack, empty, with partial load out, and full load out on several occasions, ranging from a short trip to the park, to a few overnight adventures camping. Sliding has been a major issue. I was relieved when we fully extended the adjustable straps (because X is at the larger side size wise of this product,) and the pack fit him comfortably with some tightening needed. It took him a while to get used to having the pack on, which overall is an extension of him he's not yet aware of. This makes for a good laugh or two when he's bumping into things, or us! He's not used to being so wide. Of course, like other reviews had mentioned, the backpack cants or slides to one side. I was hoping that with as much hair as X has, we wouldn't run into that problem. Unfortunately that wasn't the case, and I was unhappy with this because I want our dog to be as comfortable as possible, hence why it received the 3 star rating. My husband and I have tried multiple readjustments, such as crossing the underbelly straps. That worked better than the suggested arrangement and set up. We also tried lightening the load, with no change in lopsidedness, also attempted to use a full load out, no difference. We're disappointed in the pack, but for $18 it wasn't an incredible loss. We will try to use it more in the Fall/Winter time. And I might go as far as adding an additional strap somewhere to help with the sliding. 3/5 sarahdgaf.com

I got this for our lab mix because she's anxious around people and I thought it might help with he anxiety in public, similar to a thunder jacket. She loves to wear it (maybe because she knows it means she's going somewhere). She's good about standing still when we get things in or out of it. Maybe it does give her a sense of purpose. We've gradually increased the weight in it for her. It is tight to get 10" bottles in it. The strap under her belly seems to work it's way loose and I've decided to sew it in place, which seemed to work fine the last outing. It seems ready for the outdoors. She hasn't submerged it, but it's been splashed with a fair share of mud and water and has held up fine. I did have an issue where the outside seem was sewn by a couple stitches into the inside seem, so I had to clip the thread so I could expand the pocket. I'm hoping that doesn't mean it will work it's way into a hole where I snipped it. We enjoy using it, she enjoys wearing it. I like that the top is breathabke mesh. I'd recommend.

I loved this backpack and so did my dog… Until it fell apart. It’s such a pretty color and so cute on him and seems pretty comfortable, but only had 10 days when it started to fray and the seams started to come apart. By the three-week mark you can see the huge tear completely in one pocket. unusable with items falling out. This was one walk a day, not even real hiking. I was just using it to wave him down I was just using it to wave him down. He’s carrying pretty ordinary stuff that a dog pack should be durable enough to handle. Food and water, pretty heavy but isn’t that the idea? i’m getting a replacement so I’ll try again on the off chance this was a dud, but if this one doesn’t last I will send it back for a full refund. UPDATE: got replacement, second one developed same tears and holes and worn spots within a week. Just carried simple water and food. Going back for refund. Really too bad. Update number two: i’m now on my fourth pack because this is the one my fosters Rescue insists on buying him even though they don’t last. I just added photos of packed number four and how completely it ripped. Buy this pack if you just want to keep adding to a landfill. Absolutely ridiculous that they can’t make this more adorable. What a waste

Now to make sure you are getting the proper sizing before you order here just go to http://outwardhound.com/ site and go to GEAR then hit backpacks. :o) I had to return this pack becuase the measurements were wrong. My suggestion to you is to please, go to Kyjen's website and look at the measurements for this particular pack. They make more than one pack and I've noticed people listing measurements for the wrong pack. That's what happened to me and becuase of it I had to return it. However I was able to purchase the right size somewhere else and felt I could come back and let you know how things are going so far. . Do note, this pack is smaller than their other packl. It's lightweight which helps in the heat. She is able to hold her two bowls (which fold flat, see my review for them if interested) some food and some other small items like eye wipes, clips etc. I carry the water but if it was placed in a flat, or small round bottle this pack fits it just fine. She loves it, and this is a dog that does not like to be harnessed. She puts up with it but doesn't jump for joy when she is in her regular walking harness. So far it's held up fine. My dog is an Aussie and likes having jobs. She does search, herding, she hikes, swims and we even allow her to go into our house first when we get home as she likes to do a full check before we come in. A lot of the time she is wearing a pack (except for herding) It's nice to have her things all together as well with out using one of the larger packs. The handle on the top turns it into a carrying case for her items when she's not wearing it and it's light enough to just pack into my bag as well. It looks really nice too. I will update this review with a photo soon.

I was able to use the medium size backpack and adjust it straight out of the box without instructions. My dog is a 30 pound 10 month old border collie/sheltie mix and can be mouthy. I was worried that he would tear this pack to pieces since it's so lightweight but he allowed me to put the harness on him without a problem and I was able to snap him into it 1-2-3. When I put the pack on him, he did try to nibble on the sides of the saddlebag but they were far enough out of reach. While taking him out for a 1/2 mile walk he stopped trying to nip the side of the bag and seemed to really focus on the task at hand. I was able to counterbalance the pack with a 0.5 liter water bottle on both sides, his treats and his poopy bags. There was room for more but I didn't want to overdo it the first time out with the pack. Sure the pack appeared to wobble back and forth on his back but what backpack doesn't?This product really made my hyper energetic dog tired and he seemed less frantic and even took a nap afters. Love the price. Love the design. Love that the saddlebags detach to give the dog a break during hikes. I think due to the lightweight design, I would be careful to not go for longer hikes for fear of snagging it but my dog went through bushes and under pine trees without a problem. On the other hand, the price was so low that I can always buy another one, maybe in green next time. One issue: my dog has a deep abdomen and the strap that went around the abdomen was still a little loose despite tightening it to the fullest (hence the slight wobbling). Still, I figured that it might leave room to grow.

Haben eine Akitadame mit ca. 28kg und Größe L. In jede Tasche passt leicht eine 1L Milchpackung. Das Ding ist genial. Wenn man die Taschen gleichmäßig belädt verrutscht es auch nicht. Allerdings würde ich die Leine eher an einem zusätzlichen Halsband anbringen, da sonst der Rucksack links oder rechts verrutscht.

Great product! Huge improvement from my husky's last backpack in terms of comfort and fitting. It is lightweight and he doesn't mind wearing outside of walk time too. Easy to adjust sizing but may take a little time to acclimatise dogs not used to backpacks (requires them to fit leg and head through loops). Here he is carrying 1kg of baked beans.

Now that we've used the pack, I'm really confused about some of the negative reviews here, so wanted to add my two cents, since the negative reviews almost stopped me from buying this. This is a fabulous day pack (we live downtown in a big city and it's perfect for our day trips and adventures, walking 1-3 hours on a normal terrain). It's a day pack, it's not advertised for use as a hunting or forest hiking pack, so I'm not sure why so many reviewers bought it for that purpose and then left bad reviews - there are more expensive and sturdy packs for those purposes. This pack does run a bit large - my boy is 37lbs and has a 24" chest, so according to the sizing charts a medium should fit him perfectly, however we had to tighten the medium a LOT and now the excess straps have to be wrapped and tucked in so they don't hang around his underbelly and trip him - I think a small would have fit him a lot better. It doesn't slide to the side as long as the weight in the pack is even on both sides, and it's VERY easy to put on and remove. I wasn't confused about the straps at all, like other reviewers were...it has the exact same type of adjustable straps as a human backpack has, and once the initial size adjustments are done, there are buckles on every strap to easily snap this on and unbuckle to remove it quickly and effortlessly. A lot of reviewers were critical about the pack sliding when their dog plays in it - we use this for walking distances in the city, and I remove it when we arrive at our destination, so my dog doesn't wear it when he's playing. The only negative feedback I have is that the straps can feel a bit rough rubbing against my dog's underbelly, so it would be nice if Outward Hound would consider adding a soft cover to protect the belly (like a seatbelt cover type material). However, this is an easy fix, if I sew on a piece of felt or cotton myself. A lot of people have complained about the D-ring coming off. I walk my dog with a collar/leash so cannot comment on the D-ring, since we'll never be using it. The materials are good quality and the straps are sturdy, and stay in place once they've been properly adjusted. Anyway, this is a fabulous purchase, if you buy it for the intended purpose. My dog seems comfortable wearing it, and the pockets are substantial enough to carry quite a few supplies, dishes, water, snacks, poop bags etc. It's everything I hoped it would be, and is fabulous for day trips around the city. I'm so pleased!
