Pyro Putty MEGA Ferro Rod - Comes with 2, 0.5 oz Cans of Putty Putty (Summer and Winter) & a Multitool Striker (Mega Ferro Rod Orange Kit)

First off: I was worried about buying an item that wasn’t eligible for Prime shipping but it arrived 4 days after I ordered it which was way better than I expected.My car survival kit has most of the things I need in it but I was missing a fire starter. I’ve got a lighters and some matches but lighters get borrowed and sometimes just don’t work and matches have a 20% success rate, if that.I live in the city so I didn’t have a chance to test it until the 4th of July weekend when it’s completely acceptable to have smoke coming out of your back yard.It’s been a few years since scout camp so I made sure I had the instructions available, got a small clump of dried grass, and the blue can of pyro putty. I made a ball about the size of a marble and stretched it out like the instructions said on the grass. After failing to create a spark a couple times I used the instructions and got a spark. I tucked it into the grass under the putty and struck a good spark and it lit right up.The marble sized ball of putty burned for 2 - 3 minutes and lit all of the grass I put in it on fire. The flame was about 6” high for a good minute. I’m pretty confident I could start a roaring fire in a survival situation.Hopefully I never have to find out.Side note about the putty: I expected it to smell like chemicals and I was pleasantly surprised when it smelled like pine tar soap.

In full disclosure I have to tell you that I got my first can of Pyro Putty thru my BattlBox subscription. You can see that can in the photo where I have the ferrous rod in my hand. I bought this kit because I thought it was a really good deal. It comes with two 0.5oz cans of Pyro Putty, a striker, the ferrous rod and the cool little nylon bag. Have to tell you I was surprised when I got the kit, which is the reason that I added the photos to this review. The ferrous rod is HUGE. I was expecting something the size of a ballpoint pen, but as you can see it is much bigger than a ballpoint pen. I am not really impressed with the striker, but that is okay. I will most likely use the rib edge of my knife as a striker. Bottom line, if you can’t get a really good spark from this ferrous rod and get your Pyro Putty to light, then you need to give up camping and stay out of the woods.

This ferro rod has a very nice well machined storage compartment in the handle. I place the full .5 oz pyro putty one quick tinder and a small piece of fat wood inf the handle. I have also purchased the pyro putty several times. A ferro rod flamed the putty usually with two strikes. I also like that their is no odor to the product. The 2 oz tin will be reused as a char cloth tin when it is empty. I highly recommend both products.

The ferro rod is quite large which was a great surprise, the storage compartment is large enough to hold a small can of the putty. I like the quality of the rod. The putty lights right away with a lighter, I did find it took a little more preparation with the ferro rod, but when you build a fire with a ferro rod you need to prepared your materials and tinder bundle anyway. Happy with the product.

Haven't used the product yet, so I can't say anything about using it just yet.Product is very nice quality. Came in nice little yellow fabric carry pouch, so it could hold everything all in spot.Plus on the receipt we got in the package was a nice Hand Written Note from one of the ladies that work at the company. Thanking me for the order! Which now a days is nice too see!!

This set up is perfect to pack in your hiking pack, emergency kit, or just to have on hand to start a fire anywhere you are. It doesn’t take much room & you will never be left without the ability to start a fire in wet or dry conditions. We loved it so much we will be ordering a set for each of our emergency kits & vehicles.

This stuff is amazing and everyone should own some of this.
