Great book for postcard collectors of any age. This one's especially useful for "newbie" collectors looking for a bit of history and info on proper archival, card cleaning techniques, etc. But be forewarned: the different artists showcased and samples of their work are in black and white. Color would have been nice but for the price I'm not disappointed. However, calling it an "encyclopedia" is a quite a reach. It's nice but not all-inclusive.Hope this review was helpful.

Yes, the illustrations are in black and white instead of color but IMHO, that is not so important as whether the book provides adequate information. It covers more than a 100 categories of postcards covering years from 1898 through 1918; various artists; brief history and samples of postcards. Susan Brown Nicholson chose to illustrate more than 1100 postcards; how to preserve, restore, frame, and sell postcards; and at the very end, sources to collect more postcards and information from.I was very happy with the delivery time, the way in which it was packaged, and the condition of the used book was very good-in fact, so good that I was glad I took a chance on buying a used copy instead of new.

As a novice collector, this was a very informative book, history wise. However (and I figured this out before I bought it) that the "price guides" would be extremely outdated. Although expensive, color photos of the cards would have been a plus.

Upon receiving, my initial thought was returning this book. I was confused by the flow ... finding particular types of cards, artists, value. But, after taking a bit more time to familiarize myself with the way it was composed, I decided to keep it.I have yet to find an antique postcard guide that includes adequate types of cards and pricing. Also, it would be nice to find one that includes more artists; not just the top few.Has anyone made a more complete & comprehensive guide?

Just what I was looking for. Very informative.

While the book is helpful, my copy is missing a complete signature (a 32 page section). The seller refunded my money, but I'm disappointed. It appears to have been a printing error, as no pages are ripped out.
