Great Read to help with Goal Setting for 2016
How do you achieve greatness? Lewis Howes entices those of who strive for more with his recently published book called The School of Greatness. The premise poses the intriguing idea that with just 238 pages we could take a world-class course in how to live a great life. Perhaps hokey to the more cynical minded, but for dreamers like myself it caught my eye.Howes is an All-American athlete who after suffering a career-ending injury and being dumped after moving across the country found himself broke of heart and broke of spirit laid up on his sister’s couch for months. But sometimes rock bottom points us to our peak, and he ended up getting back up, creating a multi-million dollar business and motivating thousands as a public-speaker and consultant. In the book, Howes identifies eight lessons that he learned along his journey and through the many “professors” that he interviewed over the past few years on his podcast. I’ll provide a quick summary of each :1.) Create a vision – Identify a specific vision with a clear set of goals to achieve your dream. Further, make that vision your new identify.2.) Turn adversity into advantage – Let the challenges in your life be the motivators to pursue your dreams. Accept your failures and be grateful for them as they move your towards success.3.) Cultivate a champion’s mindset – To be a champion one must think like a champion, which is rooted in a strong belief in one’s self. This belief is coupled with vision, focus, discipline and humility4.) Develop hustle – You must embrace a burning desire to do what others are unwilling to do. To achieve your goals you have to work harder and smarter.5.) Master your body – Greatness starts with the mind and the body. Sleep, nutrition and fitness are all keys to ensure that we feel good so that we have the energy to get what we want in life.6.) Practice positive habits – Daily habits can make the difference. Make your bed, meditate, go for a walk every evening, read for 30 minutes each day – whatever the habit, commit to it.7.) Building a winning team – Surround yourself with people who motivate and inspire. Cultivate strong relationships. Find the right mentor or coach. And cut those people who are not helping you on your path to greatness.8.) Be of service to others – In addition to improving your own life, improve the lives of those around you – your family, friends, community and the world. Think outwardly to achieve greatness. The book is easy to digest even as it gives you a lot to consider. Each chapter includes exercises to help put these lessons into practice. For me, it requires a second reading in which I force myself to dig deep and consider each lesson a bit more closely. However, the books works on just the surface level to challenge yourself to do better.I have never listened to his podcast but definitely want to check them out now. My only surprise with the book was that his “professors” were not bigger names. Not to mean that insight can’t be gained from people of less renown but some of his examples – like his brother and a friend from high school – while impressive felt too shoehorned. Overall though it was worth the time and consideration and will be a book worth revisiting as I work through my goal setting for the year ahead.

Great motivational self-help book with a "coaches advice" feel
This was a good quick read. The School of Greatness is written in such a genuine voice I feel like I was able to see things from Lewis's perspective. In the middle of reading the book I realized Lewis had a podcast so I listened to a few episodes of that too, then I could really appreciate his perspective and the expertise he brings to this book. The book is presented in a real world "coaching" sort of tone which I found really relatable as a runner and triathlete. The book is well worth a read and I would recommend adding it your repertoire of self-help/personal development books! To address some of the concerns identified in other reviews about lack of content originality and focus on humility.1. It is a self-help book so it does have similar themes of advice to other self-help books. Where I think School of Greatness is unique is that it has a "coaches advice" feel to it. Some people may really like that because the action steps are well-delineated and make you feel like you're getting a good personal development workout in. If you're searching for knowledge without taking action you might not like the focus on action but the book is structured with the action steps at the end so you could potentially skip over that and move on to the next concept.2. Others addressed the lack of focus on humility in the book. Lewis does talk about delusions of ability being a stumbling block and that humility is needed to become great. I think the entire tone of the book suggests that greatness doesn't mean being a selfish egotist with no friends but rather a balanced human being with the courage to step into your true potential.I'm very happy I read this book, I really enjoyed it!

Brain candy & inspiration. You'll enjoy reading this book.
I was sent an advanced copy of the book, and I really wasn't expecting much from Lewis Howes. I mean, he's just another jock turned business owner, right?Wrong.I purchased an additional copy of the book because I really enjoyed Lewis' take on achieving greatness. You had to expect that a pro athlete would put a lot of focus on the physical attributes of greatness, but I got a lot out of the case studies and examples Howes used throughout the book. Each example was from a friend, colleague, or family member that gave new dimension to what otherwise might have been the "same old, same old" motivational messaging we've heard before from the likes of Gary Vee, Tony Robbins, and others. That said, it felt like his own experiences were minimized a bit in favor of the guests from his podcast. I would have liked knowing more about Lewis and how his own life mirrored his "8 Principles of Greatness", but that didn't prevent the book from being highly inspirational and actionable. Some parts of the book felt a little rushed or glossed over, but the first chapter on creating a vision is rock solid advice for someone struggling to get clarity on their direction in life/work - there are some great activities, questions, and worksheet-style pages to get you thinking and taking action. The book also carries a strong gender bias (as demonstrated even further by the book's trailer video), but there's still plenty for women to get out of the book as well.As other reviewers have said, don't expect revolutionary findings or anything "new". There's a lot of great common sense inspiration and guidance, and if you've listened to Lewis' podcast, you've heard some of this before. But this format makes it more accessible, easier to implement, and the book is just plain fun to read.
