will it trace a single wire

I just tried it because I wasn't sure, you won't be able to trace the wire in the wall but you will be able to identify a single conductor when you touch the probe to the other end of it.

I need to trace a 12V wire through an RV to determine where it is shorted; is this device appropriate for this purpose?

If you can get to the wire or know where it is running it will work to trace where you are losing power RV walls are pretty thin

Can I use this kit to find a Cat-5 cable behind sheetrock, 2-3 inches at most ? If not, which product does this ?

Not sure. You might be able to if you can connect the tone generator to one end of the Cat5 cable. The signal would be very faint, at best, as this device is made for the probe to actually touch the wire. Not familiar with a tone generator that would work this way, but the Home Depot has a device that will allow you to see through walls to see what's behind it. Sound like that would be more what you need.

Will this test camera wires with rj45's at each end to confirm proper connections

If you just need to test for continuity then you can put an rj45 jack on each end and tone one end and test the other you can see if you have continuity

The best wire tracer

Excellent was able to find a short Easley and accurate...also found a bad burned up wire in the wall cut open the wall and found the burned up wire...nice! Saved me lots of time tracing wires to panel ...the best..I bought the greenlee tracer that cost $1000 didn't even find the shorted wire this is definitely an electrician tool...

BAD BATTERIES!!!

I had all the outlets from one breaker go out...but breaker was fine. Was at the end of my patience and ordered this toner and probe. I watched a view youtube videos on how to calibrate it and within minutes I found my problem. The tool worked perfectly. However, do NOT use the batteries it came with. Upon delivery I put the batteries in, played with it for awhile, to be sure I knew how to use. The next day I get out, ready to trace. The probe turns out, but won't pick up the signal from the toner. I was stumped, it worked 12 hours earlier. I decide to package it up and return, which meant removing the brand news batteries it came with. Opened the battery case and found one battery had leaked all over the inside. I took it out, cleaned it up and put in fresh batteries and worked great. Tool great, batteries very bad!!!

This tool is essential for tracing wires. So quick and easy.

Worked great for tracing ethernet wires for a POE security system. The wires disappeared and reappeared throughout the house and this made quick work of know where each wire terminated, cut, etc.It probably does so much more, but did the job I needed it to. Well built and will be using it more often.

Use It Correctly

I had moved breakers and wires around in my in house breaker panel and long story short, my kitchen AC is on a single breaker and the outlet had no power anymore. Drove myself nuts for days trying to figure out what I did wrong.Finally purchased this toner and watched Youtube videos and still had no luck, very frustrating . Till today, 4-27-25, heres what I did to trace a 20 amp wire from the outlet to the breaker box.Shut off the main breaker ( whole house ) , then disconnected the Black Hot wire, White Neutral, Bare Ground from the outlet plug itself.Then I attached the RED clip from the toner to the BARE copper end of the Black Hot wire.Then I attached the BLACK clip of the toner to the BARE ground wire coming to the outlet.I then turned the toner to the highest tone setting.Then I turned up the volume on the tracer end and I had one black wire that I had cut for some reason, and that wire I held the tracer against.That was my wire omitting the tone.FINALLY found my issue, so this toner / tracer does WORK. It was probably at least 30ft from the outlet to the breaker box.One Youtube video, the guy explained that you have to trace with the LIGHT, NOT THE TONE.Well thats B.S !!
