Very poor design
First, does the valve work, yes it works. My issue is with the design of these valves. The Hayward valves are designed so that when the handle is in line with the pipe, the valve is closed! And when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is open! This is completely the opposite of how every other valve is designed. For everything else in your house or shop, a valve with the handle inline with the pipe means it's open. But not for the Hayward valves. Had I known this when my pool was being built, I would have insisted the pool builder use a different valve.
