The Godfather of Afrobeat
If you don't know about the rich tradition of music that stems from this man's oeuvre, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti; 15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997) was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, an African music genre that combines traditional Yoruba music with funk and jazz.

First Fela
I first heard of Fela when I watched the Ginger Baker documentary, and I am not sure how I never heard of Fela before. When I listened for the first time, I immediately thought of James Brown because of the tight repetitive groove and the tight horns. The songs on this album reward close listening because they evolve organically during the extended run times and build in power. If you like soul, R&B, and "world music", give it a try. The CD case has some nice paragraphs on each song including the messages Fela was getting across. No doubt this guy had soul for miles and a powerful personality. Good voice too with cool call and response. Dark subject matter but still fun to listen to.

a document of protest as well as danceable musical style
Fela Kuti with one of his best band line ups explores in his inimitable style the politics of obedience and resistance. It's not flawless studio production, but a rhythmic extrapolation in performances of "Zombie" and "Mr. Follow Follow". His improvisation and persona combine to make this recording a document of protest as well as danceable musical style.

Makes You Want to Move
Fela Kuti is kick ass...driving...raw rhythms. The roots of James Brown etc. Afrobeat at it's finest. Tony Allen's drumming is driving, original and moving.
