Sugar Coated Sins (Donut Shop Mysteries Book 20)

Tedious and predictable
The author seems to be forgetting which series she is writing. For books 1-19 of this series, the owner of Suzanne's favorite restaurant (Napoli's) is "Anjelica". Suddenly, in this book, her name is "Anita".Also, early on in the series, Chief Phillip Martin makes a point of correcting someone who calls him "Sheriff", letting the person know that he is the "police Chief", that April Springs does not have a sheriff. This was true, right up through book 19, where Steven, then Jake, were made "Interim Chief" after Martin retired. But now, in book 20, Jake is the "acting sheriff", and they refer to a time when Phillip Martin was a deputy getting ready to run for sheriff, and who the sheriff was before Phillip Martin. The plot lines are getting predictable and tedious, the "heroine" is coming across as a pompous twit. I will not waste anymore money on Jessica Beck books.

Oops
The series is running out of gas. Other reviewers have pointed out continuity errors. I'd have thought that writers with more than one series of books would keep a bible of who's who and what's what. Way too many mistakes in this one. The plot, too, is far-fetched (even by cozy mystery standards) and hard to follow. The end of the book could make a person think that the doughnut shop is closed. At this point, I'm not sure I'd care.

Better than the last few before it.
This book is better than some of the ones that came before it. It is more involved and more like the first few of the series that I read. I have read all 20 of these books. I am not into doughnut making so the recipes are not that important to me. The heroine is spunky and smart although she is also lucky. She does keep getting into trouble because she won't share what she has found out with her boyfriend, now husband and now sheriff of the town or even with her best body that she investigates with. But she is personable and I like her and most of her friends and her mother is very cool...so it is worth reading all of the books. The last few before this one seemed rushed and almost like the author was just trying to crank them out for the sake of publishing a book but this one reverts back to her better style as it was in the first books in the series. It does seem our heroine is settling down with her hubby and her doughnut shop and this might be the last book in the series. Might be a good thing as that is a small town and if people keep getting killed there will be no left in the town.

Death is not easy even if it is an accident.
Another successful book. I like that Jake is acting sheriff now & married to Suzanne. They work well together solving crimes. Grace is back in action. Got over being scared, but now Suzanne maybe too scared after this one. Only time or the next story will tell.

I truly enjoyed the first 15 novels
I truly enjoyed the first 15 novels. However, this and the previous novel left a bad taste. Suzanne is now being written as a fully entitled snoop. She shamed her best friend in the last novel for not joining her on an investigative jaunts and in this one she has an air of arrogance that leaves me unable to finish the book. I just don't like her anymore. I also have been having trouble with the silly dialogue of over-sensitive characters. Sorry Ms. Beck, but it's time for me to get off the Donut Hearts ride.

good series
Sometimes with a series, the books become more cookie-cutter. This one isn't. The characters are more and more developed and the situations are still believable. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Sugar coated sins
I like that Jessica's books are easy reading. They keep you interested in the story line. There isn't a lot of boring narratives. I would recommend this book to whoever likes easy reading books.

Suzanne isn't as great as she thinks she is
I think this was the weakest Donut Shop book of the series. I can't, under any circumstances, imagine two State Police officers taking orders from a donut shop owner. In this book, Suzanne practically walks on water. I don't mind a little imagination stretching plot, but the characters need to be at least a LITTLE fallible! Suzanne isn't as great as she thinks she is!

Great
Excellent read. Can hardly wait to fear her next book. Yes, yes, yes yes, yes, God, good, good. What a crock 18 words. Sheesh
