It's a nice sugar cane old school cola
The Monin - Cola Syrup tastes much like cola but slightly different. It doesn’t have the heavy clove taste the root beer has, but it is there. But I don’t mind it.I did get it for the choice of syrup for one of my kids, and he took right to it. I did buy him the SodaStream cola syrup, and he said he likes both. This syrup doesn’t have the adverse reaction the root beer has, where the root beer almost makes the soda flat. It takes a little of the carbonated bite away, but not enough to say it’s a negative.I will purchase this item again.

Looking for the taste of Coke, this is it!
I received a SodaStream as a gift, and thought the syrups were ghastly. But I wanted sugar cane cola, so after reading the reviews, I gave Monin a try. I actually prefer it to Coke (although my son says it doesn't have the "bite.") I also find that I have stopped drinking Coke altogether and, as a result, I have cut my sugar intake in half. Instead of popping a Coke several times a day, I mix myself a Monin and soda as a special treat once or maybe twice a day; rather like treating myself of an evening with a gin and tonic or glass of wine. Also, I find that the Monin cola syrup helps my stomach problems, and as a person with Chonic IBS, this added benefit is priceless. Perhaps it is only my imagination, but I have tested this theory several times, and am more and more convinced it works. I know cola syrup was dispensed originally way back in the 1800s by the druggist for stomachache, but thought that just a "snake oil" myth. I am curious to know if any other Monin cola syrup users have noticed this benefit. If so, I'd like to hear from you.

Great option for caffeine-free cola
I love the taste of this stuff and am thankful it doesn't have caffeine, since I try to avoid caffeine later in the day. We use it with our Sodastream.Pros:No caffeineSweetened with sugar (the Sodastream stuff has artificial sweeteners even in the non-diet syrup, and that tastes gross to me)Tastes really good (hubby and I both like it)Cons:Expensive here (cheaper buying directly from Monin, but cost per serving is still up there)Bubbles like crazy when adding to seltzerRequires a lot of syrup (a 1 liter Sodastream bottle requires about 1/2 cup of syrup)Overall, it's not a particularly cost effective syrup if you're trying to save money, but if you're using syrup like this for a caffeine-free and naturally sweetened alternatives to what's on the store shelves, it's pretty great stuff.

Its cola, but with an aftertaste
This other review was on point:"There's not doubt this tastes like cola, but it doesn't taste like Coca-cola or Pepsi. The initial taste is pretty good, but the aftertaste is different from mainstream colas. It finishes with a somewhat medicinal flavor left in the mouth. I imagine one could get used to it or even acquire a test for it"I agree 100%. It is cola flavored, but the aftertaste takes some getting used to. Might just have to buy a large quantity of coke syrup.

FABULOUS!
WOW! I've been using Barr's Cola Syrup, and Monin Sugarcane Cola Syrup beats it hands down! Monin's product uses sugar cane, while Barr's uses high fructose corn syrup (although Barr apparently does have a sugar cane alternative), which makes Monin a healthier choice. And, while Barr's product does work for soothing stomach upset, Monin's works just as well - and the taste is far superior. If you need more reason to choose Monin over Barr: you currently can get a HUGE 750 ml bottle of Monin for $16.95; a measly 16 oz. bottle of Barr's Cola Syrup currently goes for $22.25. Plus, Monin comes in a lovely glass bottle (securely shipped in a uniquely-designed box) which you can proudly display on your counter; Barr comes in an ugly plastic bottle you'll want to hide in your cabinet. I encourage you to try this product - both for your tummy troubles as well as for making delicious drinks!

Does not taste good
I've been buying Monin cola syrup for a while. I drink it all of the time. I ordered another shipment of Monin cola syrup and immediately noticed a difference. The syrup seemed thinner when I poured it into the glass. When I tasted it it was definitely different. It does not taste good. I compared the label of the new bottle to the label on the old bottle. The ingredients are the same but the label design is different as is the syrup. This syrup isn't worth drinking. I checked my order to see if I could return it. I am not able to return this item. I spent a lot of money on this order. I purchased a lot of bottles to have on hand as I drink several cokes a day. Because the company did not make the consumer aware that it changed the formula, I feel I was misled about the item I purchased. Not only does the syrup taste bad, Monin also increased the price of each bottle. Don't waste your money buying this product.

Big glass bottle, and an off taste
We tend to have calamities with big glass bottles in the refrigerator. The syrup itself is not pleasant whether mixed into Soda Stream or Club Soda, or sipped with ice to try to quell nausea. There's an off flavor which makes me wonder if something besides the listed ingredients ended up in the stuff. I won't describe it, but trust me that it's not good. I used to use cola syrup for nausea and it was pretty effective, even compared to prescribed antiemetics, but I am sorry we bought THIS one.

Erases the aftertaste of The Other Guys cola
As others have noted, used by itself this is no way to save money on cola. It works out to about $3/liter, when a 2-liter bottle of Coke or Pepsi is $1.25 at Walmart. In spite of which I just bought more. Here's why:The SS cola syrup is a lot cheaper -- it almost does compare to off-the-shelf Coke or Pepsi -- but you'll find many reviews that talk about an aftertaste that most people didn't like. I didn't either. Quite by accident, because I only had a bit of this left, I discovered that adding a dash of Monin to a liter of the SS cola erases the aftertaste. So now I put some in every time I make a bottle. Used this way, the price is reasonable.
