Book binding quality extremely poor (pages fall out), otherwise excellent book. Excellent customer serivce from Scholastic.
EDITED 2/1/2017: SCHOLASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE: 5 stars - I emailed them with photos to show the condition of the book and they sent me a brand new book. Months later, with the same amount of use, the book still looks brand new. I have upgraded my rating to 5 stars.BOOK BINDING QUALITY: 0 starsBOOK INFORMATION QUALITY: 5 starsWe bought "Pokémon Deluxe Essential Handbook: The Need-to-Know Stats and Facts on Over 700 Pokémon" in Paperback from Amazon on August 25, 2016. Within a month, a few pages had fallen out and we chalked it up to chance. Now, two months in, there are probably 30 pages that have come out, including single pages and bigger sections. This is ridiculous for a kids book that you know will be read and reread and shared around with friends and flipped through time and time again. This book definitely should have a spiral binding. My son is very disappointed that he spent his birthday money on something that hasn't lasted. That said, he loves this book and looks at it daily and it's so full of information that it keeps him busy reading for hours.

A must have for any Pokemon fan.
My son loves this book. It contains all sorts of bits and pieces about the Pokemon characters. I don't think it really helps in anyway with actually playing the game, but it's a nice addition to any Pokemon fan's collection.I should read this book myself and increase my knowledge of Pokemon, that way when my son is talking to me about it I won't think he's speaking Greek (which wouldn't be a problem if I'm Greek, but I'm not). Hmmm, do you think citizens of Greece have a similar saying, like "That guy was talking to me about rocket science but it all sounded like <insert some other language than Greek here> to me"? If you're Greek, please leave a comment, I'd really like to know. And if you are Greek, you'll be happy to know that your child will love this book if you get it for them.I've read other reviews saying the book will start to fall apart quickly, but my son hasn't abused his enough yet. I'm sure after a few trips in his backpack time will tell. I'll post a follow-up review and let you know.***UPDATE 2/26/2016***I'm happy to report that after hauling this thing around in his backpack since Christmas, this book is still holding together very well. No pages have fallen out, the spine isn't broken, the cover is still intact, etc... This book still gets frequent use, because my son tries to convince me daily that reading this should count toward his 30 minutes-of-reading-at-home requirement.

Cheaper than Pokemon cards, but convenient and informative
Our boys all love this book. We have 4 sons and work hard to teach them about sharing and that they won't always have what one of their brother's have. As a result, even with gifts there is power in having possession of the object. With this book, the boys were sleeping with the first copy, carrying it into the bathroom, lugging it to school, it was a constant battle. Typically a new toy or book gets a few days old and loses its "battle appeal" unless it has been stored away for a period of time and comes out once again making it new. Didn't happen with this book so we ordered one for each boy, which turned out to be fair as they each handle and care for their personal property differently. Now they sit down together and have Pokemon battles, citing to the evolutions in the book. Even though we bought 4 of these books, we saved a ton of money and hassle because each book is cheaper than a box of Pokemon cards without the litter potential of the cards. These books have really added a spark to our children's imagination and allows for easy game play.

A must have
My sons copy has at least 4 DOZEN post-it flags throughout this book. I bought it for him about 5 months ago and he still reads it all the time. Adding new flags and trying to explain the pokemon significance to me.The fact that he still reads it is important. Our library has an extensive pokemon handbook and all around reference type collection. (Staying in stock is a huge problem so we're still always seeing something old but new to us) After checking one out he doesn't usually ask to buy, renew it or check it out again later and if he sees something new he will flip quickly through to see if there is anything new. He always falls back to this one. So it must be good.He doesn't watch the tv show or movies or read the comic books. He reads the old pikachu early readers and has pokemon Omega on the DS. So that's his extent of the pokeverse for him this book is great. Since each newer book edition just adds on the new pokemon plus the 700+ old ones. Your kid will notice that none/majority of the main/new featured pokemon on tv/game are in this book. If they are playing newer games or watching the show. The book is great but for kids heavily in the pokeverse make sure you get the newet edition. It makes a huge difference.

A review for Pokemon GO fans
So, you have fallen hard for Pokemon Go and you want to educate yourself in order to get an edge in collecting Pokemon and dominating at gyms. This isn't really the book for you. It will not help you play Pokemon Go better, but it will make you smarter about Pokemon. And that can help.It will help you understand the Pokemon you are hunting...their type (which can help a bit at the gyms), their attacks (which do not all necessarily appear during battles) and their evolutions (which will matter when deciding which way you want to evolve, say, Evee). You have to choose to invest your Poke-candies and Stardust wisely and having a solid foundation of Pokemon knowledge, DOES help with that. Of course researching the internet for tips and tricks will help to!As for this book, it lists EVERY blessed Pokemon ever at the date of publication. Far more Pokemon than appear to be CURRENTLY encounterable in the game. In fact, as far as I have observed (this is coming from a level 9 Mom trainer one week into the game who was steeped in Pokemon back in '99-02 while a nanny to young boys) the Pokemon you are dealing with are the ORIGINAL Pokemon from Kanto. I was still clinging to Poke-awareness when the Johtu league emerged, but I haven't come across any of those at all, nor any from the other regions listed in this book.So as you read, initially focus on the KANTO region Pokemon (region listed in a circle by each name). The number of slots in my current Pokedex align with this conclusion.I bought TWO of these books so my 9yo and 6yo could sit side by side and read/research. They kept asking me what evolves into what and what each thing could do and what type was what, and while I was once a walking poke-pedia of knowledge, 15 years of non-use has left many holes. So this should be your expectation from this book. Truly an informational guide about Pokemon rather than any kind of explicit how-to guide for Go.Still worth the $8, especially if they expand the Pokedex, which I imagine they will.

Awesome book! My son LOVES it!
This book is amazing! I got it for my 6 year old son who is super into pokemon right now for christmas. He could care less about all the toys and other presents he got. This was his favorite gift. He spends the majority of the day looking through it and learning all about pokemon and is constantly showing me all the polemon and asing me to help him read it. It lists over 700 pokemon and everything about them including what type of pokemon it is, how to pronounce the name, what region(s) its from, their height and weight, possible moves/attacks, what they evolve into with pictures, etc.The only con I've found is there is no index where it tells you what page each one is on to find it better. There are 432 pages of pokemon! So it can be a little hard to find a certain pokemon that you're looking for, BUT it is in alphabetical order so it's not too hard. But it would better if it listed the page numbers and maybe listed them by type of pokemon or something like that in the back.

Wonderful and informative for any age!
My 8 year old daughter asked me to get this for her...needless to say she LOVES pokemon. I was startled upon seeing it the very first time because of how big it is. But my daughter absolutely loves it!! She takes with her to school every day and has read it cover to cover twice now. The illustrations are good sized and look amazing. The information it provides about each pokemon is concise, easy for any age to understand and makes learning about them fun. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves pokemon and is wanting to really know about all of them. The only complaint my daughter did have is that it doesn't include the Alolan region (hopefully I spelled that correct)...but the book was made before that was created I believe. All in all a wonderful book and at a great price!!!

A very well needed handbook for those people who like Pokemon
First of all, my 9 year old son LOVES Pokemon and has been begging for me to get this book for him. I finally gave in and got it for him and so very glad that I did. This book is amazing! If you do not know much about Pokemon and just starting off, this book is def a necessity. Everything you need to know about Pokemon is inside this handbook! It is full of information and beautiful pictures. It has 432 pages total, it is in English, the publisher is Scholastic, the age range is between 7-10 years old but really anyone can get this handbook(my 4 year old even wants it). The grade level for this book is grades 2-5, but really it does not matter what grade you are in.I recommend this Pokemon handbook to anyone who likes Pokemon and is wanting to know all there is to know about Pokemon.

Buen producto

Great Value Handbook - Perfect for Pokemon Lovers!
Ordered this for our older son who along with all his little buddies at school recently became obsessed with Pokemon. He's got a whole bunch of the cards now, but wanted a book - he's more interested in the characters themselves than the cards and their gaming abilities. This book is just what it says - the essential handbook! It's as much help to us as parents, to know what the kids are on about when they talk Pokemon! There are over 700 Pokemon characters featured in this book, and after a bit of Pokemon basics in the book, you'll learn information about each character such as their:- Name- Pronunciation of the name- Possible moves- Description (thankfully bigger print than on the cards!)- Evolution- Mega Evolution- Type- Region- Height & WeightOverall, this is simply a must-buy if you have a new or little Pokemon lover in your house - this book is literally inseperable from our 6 year old's hands, he sleeps with it and takes it everywhere with him! Full on 5 star stuff, and at a great price considering how priceless it is to it's owner! :)Hope that helps.

Excellent, worth every penny!
My children bought this for their Dad for Christmas who catches Pokemon for them, but I'm guessing with the aim that the book would actually be for them. All three of my children LOVE this book (age 5,8,10) and there hasn't been a day since Christmas that one of them isn't reading it or using it as reference for their own drawings. I've seen another review state that their children flip pages and have battles based on the character they land on and that's exactly what my 3 children do. The book itself is such good quality, I bought the paper back and it's still in excellent condition. I can't say I'm a Pokemon fan myself, but I'd say this was worth every penny I spent on it!
