Samsung SCX-5835FN Multifunction Printer

We purchased one of these due to feeder problems and lack of SSL for smtp (required to work with GMail) on the Canon D1170 machines. It has a beautiful color touchscreen and the feeder didn't have the misfeed problems that our Canon D1170s do. Unfortunately the firmware randomly chokes when scanning more than 20 pages or successive small scan jobs to either SMB or smtp. The freezing occurs with pdf or tiff documents. The feeder will finish feeding the documents, but the software page count stop and not start again until machine is rebooted (even after letting it sit overnight). For us, this issue makes the machine useless because we now do more scanning than printing. Samsung customer support acted like it was a novel problem. I had a replacement machine sent from Amazon that had the exact same problem, so I doubt that I am the only one with this problem. After much badgering, Samsung said the latest firmware should fix it, but would not let me download the firmware myself, but made me obtain it from a third party that Samsung didn't release it to for a week after they said they would. Samsung support was then furious that the third party gave me the firmware directly to update (to speed things up) instead of having me take the machine into the third party to upload the firmware. The built in machine web server has a page where you are able to select the firmware file from your computer and just hit the update button, which obviously doesn't require me to take it to someone else to do. For a machine that has such promise, this was an extremely disappointing purchase and a waste of several hours for me. While the representative in support I mainly dealt with did the best he could, two other representatives were rude and demeaning. Fortunately, I was able to ask for the helpful but impotent rep when I got the reps that just tried to blame the problem on me. The third party was great to work with but seemed to be a barrier placed there by Samsung support (they wouldn't deal with me after referring me off to the third party, even though the third party could not do anything for me). For those who purchase this anyway and have the same problem, the two machines that shipped to me came with the ".36" firmware and I upgraded them to the ".38" firmware without any success. If anyone has purchased this machine but doesn't have this particular problem, please let me know what firmware version you have installed.

I'm not sure if this copier has been discontinued as it is more expensive than what I paid by several hunred dollars and there are only two in stock. We have used this machine at our business for 2 years and it has not failed us and has many features that you would find on more expensive copiers. The toner lasts a long time (6-8 months) and we print at least 40-80 pages a day. It is quick coming off standby and will finish a task well before our Brother or HP copier even wake up. We really love this machine and hope it doesn't break down... Ever =)
