Accurate, hands-on, high quality
We are using this with my homeschooled daughter alongside the documentary series “Before 1491”. Excellent hands-on activities so that she can create and cook while I read the information to her. I bought this book in particular because it is highly recommended by indigenous people :)

We are using this as part of our spine for Blossom and Roots River of Voices homeschool curriculum. My 10 year old daughter is enjoying it.

Little Content
I had high expectations for this book since it was recommended by a homeschool curriculum and had been sold out for so long. When I got it I found the activities boring and content lacking. It also only had one tribe from Texas.

Missing pages, otherwise good
The book is good overall and goes with our homeschooling curriculum. We like the respectful treatment of Native Americans. However pages 51-66 are Missing from this book. It has great activities for my 4 and 8 year old that we’ve enjoyed. But The text is a little too advanced for them and there aren’t enough illustrations. They lose interest quickly. I had to break it into really tiny chunks and even then it’s difficult to keep my 8 year old engaged in the text. But they do love the activities.

Great as a history book of sorts
I have skimmed this book so far. It’s fantastic as a detailed description and history of all the various nations. While there are crafts/activities as well, they seemed geared a bit more to older kids than I expected. I think I will hold on to the book for a year or two and then share with my kids in digestible chunks. (There’s a ton of text - well done, but just a lot to get through.)

Very detailed
Very detailed book. Would say would be best for junior high and up as it was too advanced for my kids. I enjoyed it

This book is an absolutely wonderful alternative to most Native Anerican craft books
This book is an absolutely wonderful alternative to most Native Anerican craft books. They make an honest attempt at showing as many of the Native tribes as possible, and never once do they suggest making a headdress. In fact, they even start the book off with a discussion about stereotypes and what the reality is.I truly wish this book would become a staple in teaching about Natives, even if it's just used at Thanksgiving. It treats Narives as a people, not mascots. It's very, very refreshing.
