Kwikee 676061 Motor Replacement Kit,Black

Kwikee Series 32 steps on 1999 DP Winnebago Chieftain. Stairs failed at the beginning of our last trip. By the sounds of it, I figured the motor and gearbox were toast (I gave a pretty good pull on the stairs at one stop and heard gear meshing - oooops). I did try tapping on the motor housing and a few other remedies, all to no avail. I almost ordered an entire new set of stairs, but.... After reading reviews and other research, I decided to try replacing just the motor. FYI - I did not remove "gearbox to stairs" pin - it was not necessary since the stairs magically came out when we got home. (What luck!!) Removing this pin is only necessary if you need to move the stairs out of the way in order to make access to remove the electric motor. If you have ample access, just use your leg or something else to make sure stairs stay in place when the motor is removed. Unplug main power to stairs and then also unplug small plug at stair motor. Remove three 10mm bolts, which will be lightly torqued (easily removed with pliers if nothing else is available). Electric motor dropped right out. Look up into gearbox and see if it looks okay (mine looked fine in spite of my inadvertent attempt to destroy it - gears look very sturdy). Pull up and remove gear assembly from old motor and two spacing washers, wipe clean, then place on new motor, then re-grease. Very easy. Slide new motor/gear assembly onto gear gearbox housing, hold in place while starting threads on three 10mm bolts, then tighten down (remember, not too tight - lightly torqued). Plug in small power plug at electric motor. Then make sure entire area (and especially body parts) are clear of stair movement area, then plug in main power plug. Warning - the stairs will move into their commanded position once you apply this power. I have never done this repair before but did watch some YouTube (liked this video the best: [...]. I would rate this job between a 1 and 2 on a scale of difficulty out to 10. It was a non-event. Sipped from my beer throughout, took my time, cleaned gear and washers, inspected all parts for damage, re-greased, and I doubt it took me 20 minutes. Being without stairs was a real pain, so I have ordered a spare motor to keep in the RV. The wife, kids, and dogs were all complaining about the huge step without the stairs. NEVER AGAIN!!

Jayco Greyhawk has a Kwikee "double step" with an electric motor by AM 214-1001 2G16. I searched for hours for a replacement reading blogs, contacting Jayco, AM, and kwikee, and as a last resort called three Camping Worlds in VA. This motor worked. Three hex nuts and its replaced! Twenty mins tops. CW had no openings, wait was months so we ordered here and in two days it was fixed. We are a lawyer and nurse, not DIY folks and did it with no hastle. The part is exactly as pictured. The Kwikee double step stairs now open/close with door instead of there being a grinding noise as the poor thing strained. Highly recommend using this part for a replacement even if youre not handy. It was that easy! I posted bc I wanted to help spare others the research. The motor is made by AM and all the stairs in most RVs are by Kwikiee. Image shows 3 bolts.

The motor on the auto stairs of my motor home would stop working intermittently. After searching YouTube on the issue I found it was the motor, which in reality is a power window motor. This is exactly what I needed. The install was straight forward, no issues. The steps have been working great ever since. The motor is well made and so far reliable.

This is more than just the motor. Mine came with the gear box also. Super easy and quick to install. I had previously bought a less expensive motor and gear box. It worked correctly the first few times. Then, the steps started to not retract all the way. I had to push the steps in while the motor retracted to get them all the way up. The pitch/whine of the motor is different than the less expensive one. Sa far, its working great and steps retract all the way every time.

The steps would not work consistently. They were stalling at partway closed. After installing the new motor, they worked again. I decided to take apart the old one and found the gear was completely rusted. Water got inside of the gear box and was still in there when I took it apart. The rust caused friction and slowing of the gear. That told the controller that the step was in, it shut off power to the motor.

I do rv repair so i see a lot of these repairs...heres a little info to help you out. This motor worked great on my customers kwikee step. exactly the same as the old one. My step was "skipping" going back up and would keep running when fully retracted until you disconnected the power wire. so mine had 2 problems- 1) the torque clutch in the motor case broke so i needed this motor and 2) the spur gear that goes on this motor shaft broke a tooth(spur gear only comes with the gear/linkage gearcase listed below) so you need to take your motor case and gearcase apart and see what is actually broken since it seems multiple parts will break at the same time. also regrease everything liberally you plan to reuse. you will want to make sure that this is the proper motor for your kwikee step. you may want to download a parts diagram for your step by using the info from your step sticker located underneath the step on the gearcase base. there is a different step motor for pre imgl gear cases. on the newer models such as this (imgl-integrated motor gear and linkage) its common for the spur gear that goes on this motor shaft will break a tooth-this gear is only to be had by buying the gearcase (Lippert Components 379160 Gear/Linkage *this gearcase part number for mine has the curved linkage...yours may be different if it has the straight linkage). its not included with this motor. FYI- this damage occurs from either or both, not keeping ALL of the pivot points lubricated with lithium grease or motor oil will work...not wd-40 or silicone spray! light oil sprays dont last! I use motor oil in a oil pump can to lube every joint, linkage pivot and shaft contactat point and it lasts about a year. grease wont penetrate into the binding points. OR the other cause is hitting curbs with the step and even putting the step down on a curb and then getting in and out of the rv to load. when you do this the motor has lowered the step onto the curb and stopped and then locked into place...then when you load and jostle around, the rv will rock and push down on that litttle motor and gearcase which will break something or afew things! park away from the curb so step can come out fully every time and lube often and these will last the life of the coach!

So far this seems to have cured my intermittent problem of the steps not deploying. I would have to hit the motor with a hammer just as door was opened and then they would work for awhile until it sat a few days unused. I changed out the motor east enough with three bolts (10MM) but after all done and tested I realized there were still two washers on the shaft that sat below the gear that was transferred. Of course my fault swapping while under the coach and not noticing them since it wasn’t very bright under there. So I had to undo it all and reinstall again. Worked both ways even without them but wanted to keep it the way it was. So remember to see if yours has any washers associated on the shaft after you remove the gear to transfer. This motor also has a quieter sound yet higher pitched than the previous one. So far has cured my problem. Time will tell. I should have replaced it much sooner. Easy change and not too expensive versus having to get under coach with a hammer and time it with the door opening. What a pain.

Tip: take some liquid gasket seal and seal the area between plastic and metal on both the motor and on the plastic housing. This way water will not enter (thru the very tiny rubber O-ring) and rust out the shaft; that's why my original failed. Short version: Buy this, yes its more expensive than non-OEM motors but it will work on your Kwikee double step and with your current stair controller. You won't have to get underneath the RV more than 2x to fix your issue. It will extend and retract 100% both ways and this WILL work on your Kwikee steps PROPERLY. Long version: When my original Kwikee double step motor died (the protruding metal shaft that drives the ring gear busted but otherwise motor still good), I decided to try out a cheaper (non-OEM) $60-$70 one sold here on Amazon; I read up and it had some good reviews where buyers said it fixed their step issue. Although 1 person said the amp draw was too much... keep this in mind. Non-OEM product arrived a few days later and I installed it. Cheaper non-OEM motor #1: Extending was no issue but retracting was significant issue, only going 80% of the way before stopping. In other words, the step would be closed but with 3-4 inches between steps vs tight. It would close all the way if I 'helped' it by gently pushing the stairs in for the final 6 inches of retract. I lubed and oiled all pivot points (since other RV'ers say this can be an issue) but with same result. I didn't want to return the motor yet since it was working - just that the steps would not retract all the way - perhaps its something on my end - I thought. Proceeded to buy a 2nd non-OEM motor. Same exact result; I mean exactly down to where it stops. To say that I'm shocked would be an understatement. I started to think perhaps the stair controller had become faulty. But all motors say compatible to Kwikee 1101428 motor. So I took out old OEM motor (that had a busted protruding gear shaft but perfectly fine motor) and leaving it uninstalled but simply plugged in, closed my door and lo and behold the motor turns for about 15 seconds each way. I tested it several times. The non OEM motors only turned about 7-8 seconds. My guess is that these non-OEM motors draw higher amperage and so the controller thinks the door is closed and cuts off power. I installed the OEM kwikee motor and my double steps open and close properly (100% both ways) and are quiet. Yes I paid much much more but it completely solved my stair issue.
