Product Description No synopsis available. .com Classical Indian music is uniquely well suited to mergers with modern dance beats thanks to its essential trance rhythms and discursive compositions. But it takes a good ear and lots of panache to do it right. The brainchild of keyboard wizard Victor Ruiz, Atman makes the best of traditional Indian chants and ambience, yoking Ratnabali Adhikari's beautiful, bubbly voice to ambient electronic backing tracks. Befitting the mixed-up subject matter, the songs unfold with a dollop of humor. "I Am" posits warbling female vocables against a wah-wah guitar, synthetic strings, and the spoken English-language hook, "Stop fooling around, transcendental meditation." Kickoff cut "All Is One" works an Australian didgeridoo into the mix more seamlessly than you'd ever imagine. Eternal Dance has softer contours than recent Indian fusion projects like Joi's We Are Three or Brit discs courting bhangra culture. With its heady, sandlewood-scented cloud of ethnic-music samples, wafting keyboards, and trippy beats, it's more like Deep Forest on the subcontinent. --Bob Tarte.

Not as good as I had hoped
This was a good CD, but not one of the great ones that has me listening to it nonstop for weeks. I was hoping for something more along the lines of Waterbone's "Tibet," and was somewhat let down. I did enjoy this CD, though, it's lovely, but it seems a little... lackluster.

SUBLIME TRANCE
Thank you, Atman! This CD is filled with mesmerizing, enthralling tracks that lift you into a primeval world of vedic creation--all driven to an irrestible contemporary club beat. World Music at its absolute best. No cheese, no new-agey fluff, just spirit and substance that'll keep you trance dancing for hours. I defy you not to become madly interested in classical Indian music after hearing this disc!

I first heard thuis CD being played in a yoga class, and when I got home i just had to have it. It's pretty amazing. You will have to listen to it over & over to take it all in, and you won't get tired of it. I'm certainly not going to stop playing it anytime soon. Heartily reccomended.

Truely a Philosophical Experience
To review the music in Atman would be pointless. It is a mesmerizing mesh of contemporary dance beats and classic Indian chant and mantra. I am in no way qualified to speak on the subject of Indian music or spirituality, but I can say this. I relished every minute of this CD. Since I first heard it, I've probably listened to it well over twenty five times. The only way to describe the experience is metaphor. It's like the feeling you get five minutes into an amazing movie. You know you are in for something special, something you've never seen before. The mix of spirituality and modernism is perfect. It leaves you feeling haunted. Perhaps the lyrics are given added meaning by the fact that they are mostly in Hindi, and indecipherable to this listener. But whatever it was, this cd was a magical listen, and I can't stop playing it over and over.
