Good read but, no real strategy changing info.
If you're an absolute beginner at detecting this would be useful. Not much for guys who have been doing it a while. Mostly just stories about finds. Not a bad read for stories, well written ones. Stories are not why I bought this book. I wanted some deep knowledge, some of those top secret, find it nowhere else tricks. This book didn't really deliver in that front, it's more like general guidelines. Because it was well written and a fun read, it scores higher than my initial thoughts would allow.

MY TAKE "Definately for Total Beginner's"
Lots of good info for beginners, But repeats some items too long/often Plus I believe some of this info MAY already be out there, & a lot of times its available on many Metal Detecting Internet/Blog's/Sites etc!! For me the book did Not GET Near Enough TO Detailed locations information for instance, at least for me anyway, So it was Not!! at all what I was "Expecting" I thought there would be way more MD info, or more locations Given Out or Revealed. Like I said, not bad, But in my humble opinion!! This Book is directed at true beginners' & romanantizes a little, therefore it sometimes forgets just how difficult & hard it really is, to correctly work any Beach & Metal Detecting really takes Lots & Lots of Time & Deadacation & it most always Requires tons of walking & hard work from everyone!!! Even Really Seasoned VETS!! to make it pay off or even worth your while, For all of your Time & Effort You might put in. PEROID.

Learn a few tricks I didn't know.
Found out how to read a beach better and things I wasn't looking or thinking about before. Have seen cuts several times on the beach but never set the bells in my head until reading it in this book.

Covers the basics
Excellent overview for someone new to beach hunting. Personally as someone with a couple years experience I found little new information. One point of disagreement with the author is his recommendation to be secretive about your finds with fellow beach goers lest they claim something as theirs. If you like to interact with people, as I do, part of the fun is being friendly and showing your finds if someone approaches, not hurriedly hiding them. The day before last Christmas I was hunting the North Carolina Outer Banks near several families with kids who I was later told was church group on a holiday trip. A little girl about 5 took a particular interest and rather than distance myself, I let her see what my scoop held. I stuck the odd penny or bottle cap in my pants pocket and after a bit she insisted that I take a pretty shell she had found and put it in my pocket also. Almost immediately afterward a small child's gold ring with a gold heart in the center appeared in my scoop. I told the little one to wash the sand off her fingers and it fit perfectly. The look on her face when I told her the ring was hers made my vacation. The Lord rewarded my generosity the next day, Christmas, with a large silver ring. These are the only rings I have found beach hunting.

Beginners how to for detecting... simple stuff it's great to know.
It's a great book. There... simple as pie. This book gives you some good "I'm glad I knew this before I got too deep into the hobby" kind of info... admittedly I'm not a new detector but I still enjoyed reading the info and seeing if there was anything I'd never considered before... you can pick this book up and enjoy it and you won't feel like the author is talking down to you... he's straight forward and you get the impression that he really enjoys doing what he does and you will too.... give it a read.

Good information presented in an easy to read and understand fashion
This book is great for two reasons: It explains everything you could wish for, with pictures and in detail, but is also nice to read and does not come with this copied-off-a-website vibe many other books about metal detecting seem to like so much. I can recommend the purchase, and even though it had nothing in particular to do with this book I just found my first gold ring a week ago :) The most you learn by getting out there and trying out your machine. I use an AT Pro, that is a really good beach and water machine once you get used to it, probably the best you can get short of the specialized machines like a Minelab CTX 3030 or Garrett ATX machines.

I recommend this book for everyone.
Just like Cilff Notes for metal detecting. Bare bones, very clear, no wandering off the immediate subject. My husband gave it four because nothing is perfect. He would like to see information about fresh water beaches.
