This workbook is designed to be used as a classroom resource, but I bought it for my homeschooling daughter. You pay a premium for the honor of having a workbook with transparencies, which we did not touch, but which other families might use to great effect. Each of the 36 lesson comes with information for the teacher/parent (which I selectively shared with my daughter), a full-page black-and-white line-drawing of a map (and transparency), and a series of questions. Asking one or two questions a day, the questions are supposed to last all week - but we always ended up doing one or more "weeks" worth of questions at a time. This book is not only a gentle, straightforward introduction into the way maps work, but also teaches a lot about social studies, as it discusses the different types of characters that one might find in a neighborhood (from types of homes to types of services) or state (major cities and roads, major attractions, natural resources, etc.)My daughter LOVED this book, and I loved that she loves geography. While it was in no way challenging, it provided lots of practice, and definitely helped her gain confidence around maps. Worth the purchase!

Great resource, instruction, and concepts.
We homeschool our children and use these series of books for our children. Two of our kids are dong the second grade books and another one is doing the kindergarden. We live in Virginia where they have to be tested once a year at their level. The lessons are good short lengths for the kids so they do not tire out and so far these books are a great compliment to our homeschooling. We originally started with Montessori method but now we are more close to unschoolers. My wife is the primary teacher for them and she absolutely loves these books. We have three in homeschool and two more waiting until they come of age :) And plan to keep using these books.

Great for kids who love geography
My 7 year old boy loves this and he finished the entire book within a month. He generally is crazy about maps and atlases. I thought I bought this for him to get himself occupied before going to school in the morning. He loved it so much that he kept working on it sometimes even after school. Now he finished this one and asked me to buy him more books like this more. This is a much better alternative than TV. Will definitely get more.

Great foundational book for homeschoolers
I am happy with the structure and content of this workbook and all the other grade level books by this publisher; I used them in first and second grade with my son and plan to do the same with my daughter.I piece together my curriculum from lots of different sources, using this publisher as my primary source for geography, math, spelling and language.

Good product
We use this for our homeschool. I mostly like it. The lessons are clear and laid out well. My son finds it bit too repetitive with lesson after lesson of town maps. While I appreciate that learning to read them is an important life skill, you can only do so many before wanting to skip lessons. So, we do skip lessons. We've focused mainly on the state maps. If it had more state maps and fewer fictional town maps, I'd give this 5 stars.
