Creative Lettering: Techniques & Tips from Top Artists

Great examplars, techniques, & tips! A must-have reference for lovers of contemporary lettering!
This is a great lettering book with really fun and creative examples from some of today's best contemporary lettering artists. As a professional calligrapher and lettering artist, I truly enjoyed this book and I think it has something to offer anyone who is interested in creative lettering, be it beginner, intermediate, or advanced. The book is loaded with fantastic sharing of contemporary creative lettering using a wide range of techniques, tools, and mediums. I was really impressed with the variety and plethora of examples included. Every page turn brought another delightful example from modern artists seen around the blogosphere. The only minor criticism I would offer is that the Featured Fonts and Styles/Hands section has a few inaccurate details. For example, various typefonts are used to introduce specific styles. I feel this is a mistake because it is very misleading. The fonts for the Versals and Spencerian Script do not represent a true example of each style, as calligraphers or lettering artists would see them. Also, it states the description for Roundhand, also known as Foundational, "is a style ...similar to Copperplate Script." This is not true - Foundational Roundhand is a broad edge style (not pointed pen) and would actually be closer to an Italic or even Roman style. However, this is such a minor section, it will not detract from the deliciousness of all the wonderful lettering jam-packed in the book. Highly recommend!

nice but not for beginners
This book has several samples of lettering by different artists. They even give you a step-by-step guide to try your hand at some of them. However I found the techniques not that "beginner" friendly. Step one sketch out your intended silhouette and lettering. (If I knew how to sketch out the lettering, I would not need a book on lettering.) Step three add soft shading using a paper stump. (paper stump?) Step five practice lettering on a piece of rough rag marker paper with a dip pen and black waterproof ink. (not really staples in my kid's craft kit). The book has beautiful samples by fantastic artists, no doubt. I was just hoping for something a little more simple to get my "not-a-natural-artist" tween a step further in her desire to make word art.

This is a fantastic book. I have recently become a private music ...
This is a fantastic book. I have recently become a private music teacher and am suddenly needing to hand write assignments and critiques that also need to be legible enough for my students to read. This is difficult for me because I rarely hand write things in my normal life. This book has helped me to find a style of hand writing that I like and gives me techniques on how to write legibly and quickly (a must!). The book also gave me a lot of tools and tips for doing "special" writing that really brings up the beauty level of meaningful things like writing in birthday cards, etc.

Excellent book!!!
I purchased this book as well as creative lettering for kids for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She absolutely loves both books. I would say that these books are more intended for inspiration and to give you ideas that you can run with more than a “how to” book. Which I actually prefer, and I’m so excited to get creating with my daughter. I adore Jenny Doh and I can’t wait for the companion book to come out.

Colorful and fun book
I purchased this for my nine year old to improve her hand writing skills. She spends more time tracing and trying to write "pretty" for fun notes which has translated into better handwriting for assignments.

New ideas on lettering.
I have a few of these books. A different take on lettering from doodlers. This is a good one as well as the others. Unique ideas, clever use of doodling. I make cards and write letters like the good old days, and this makes it fun.

Freehand lettering anyone can do!
This book is chock-full of lettering ideas for those who like freehand lettering. The styles are not all to my taste, but there are many styles between the covers of this large book. Entire alphabets (exemplars) are given, and the steps to create them. Some require little preparation or few tools, while others will require getting several supplies you may not have on hand if you are not a practicing artist.

Fun Book That Teaches How to Hand-Draw Fonts...
I have enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is I wanted even more information! This book does a great job giving artists an overview of handdrawn fonts...I found it very inspirational and practical at the same time. I recommend this book to designers and artists, but also to people who just play with drawing...

Very interesting and informative for the novice!
I quite like this book. Originally I got it because I wanted to do chunky-looking cursive as I have seen some planner/journal geeks do on YouTube! It has a wide selection of lettering in it, including chunky-cursive.It's very much a 'copy what you see' book but there are tips and stories from lettering creators to inspire you to create your own, but nothing comprehensive.Nowadays I don't use it for journaling - you need patience for that. I self-publish handwritten content and I have used it to do quick, aesthetically pleasing titles and stuff. I have also started to write people's names on penpal letters using funky fonts with guidance from this. It's a good reference book. Before this book I only knew how to do bubble writing.

Interesting
Shows a well-illustrated range of different lettering styles, & some interesting techniques for creating certain effects. A good book if you're seeking some inspiration....Be warned, though - to achieve these ideas, you will have to time travel, & actually use strange & archaic materials known as: 'Inks' , 'Paints' , 'Brushes' , 'Pens' , 'Tin Cans' .... & put them straight onto something called 'Paper' .With your own hands. Quite refreshing in the Age-Of-A-Million-Fonts..

inspiration for smash book/art journal
This book has lots of ideas, inspiration & instructions to help you create beautiful lettering for your artwork. There are various styles from v modern & funky to classic, grungy etc. There are also web addresses so you can see further work by the different artists. Only drawback is that it should be ring-bound as you will want to have this book open to work from...

Disappointed..
Hmm.. I'm disappointed with this book. The examples and works from the preview pages are what I expected. But there are not much things like that in the book. Some are just 'calligraphy' ..not that creative lettering per se.I tried to like like it, but after 2 times of reading it, I found myself trying to sell it on internet.
