No, there is a fiber type material that soaks up the lighter fluid...you light the filament and it burns from the fumes. I've put mine in my coat pocket "upside" down with no problems at all.

What's the difference between this and the older version?

The older version was packaged in a plastic clamshell packaging, and the new version is packaged in a much slimmer plastic packaging inside a box, which looks much more presentable. The warmer itself and the accessories are still exactly the same. Both older versions and the new version are 12-hour, and there is now also a new smaller version that works for 6 hours.
