COGAT Test Prep Grade 2 Level 8: Gifted and Talented Test Preparation Book - Practice Test/Workbook for Children in Second Grade (English)

This book has lots of questions for practice. Some of the questions involving shapes & the abacus questions were stumpers for me - so I'm glad there are explanations in the answer key. Wish kids could have more practice with the figure analogy & classification questions b/c they don't get anything like this at public school...at least not at my kid's.

As an educator with some training in cognitive psychology, I couldn't like some questions in this test. Some kids with above-average cognitive skills and math skills may actually be penalized in this test due to the lack of clarity in the questions. The way the test is administered at school (teacher's involvement, time allocation/mgmt, etc.) may also differ from teacher/school to teacher/school, so I wouldn't trust the discriminability of this test to much, especially at this level (2nd grade).Compared to another book I bough (Origins publications, 2017, ISBN-10 : 1948255006), some questions in this book assumes that 2nd graders do not have the concept of multiplication and division. If one does, (s)he will find more than one correct answers. On average, the questions in this book are little easier than the other book.

My kiddo was asked to test for our districts highly capable program, as we did not have an experience with this test we popped on Amazon and bought a few books just to give us an idea of what the test would look like. While I don’t think this book helped or hurt the test scores it served its purpose and gave us an idea of what to expect.

I bought this because i was curious what kind of questions would be asked. I also read through the insturctions on how to go about doing each section with my child.It was fun to be honest it felt like a puzzle. Child liked it and when he didnt understand something we went over it together like how the instructions said to. Its a good workbook for practice as well. I dont have anything bad to say to be honest. Seems to do what its suppose to

It’s worth buying. Covers the topic nicely and has good set of questions which may help your child giving a feel of actual exam questions
