Design flaw !Why dont the screws fit they are too short ? Wont hold microscope! Just got it in mail .

The seller is aware of the problem. They sent out an email right after I ordered mine asking me to let them know if the screws were too short. I sent them a message through Amazon. They sent the correct screws out immediately and posted a $5.00 refund for my trouble. Just let them know and I think they will take care of you.

Can I leave the unit with the charge cable connected without damaging it as long as I turn it off when not in use?

Yes, the microscope has the overcharge protection function. You can keep it charged. And once the battery is full, it will stop charging.

Does the zoom function only work on a phone because it does nothing on a windows laptop?

It Should Work With Windows As Well.... Have You Tried Rotating The Magnification Wheel/Ring...? Maybe A Combination Of The + - Buttons And The Magnification Wheel....
