PLEASE support VR-- Get these FAST!
I'm an engineer at ClassPros, and we work on vr and sims for education - special needs kids all day. As you probably know, VR (Virtual Reality) was a huge effort before the dot com bust, and many pronounced it officially DOA. Let the masses believe that-- you need to know that VR is alive, well and going to make a return like no one but a few can imagine today! HMD's with similar functionality to this unit regularly go for $25,000 to over $55,000 for those of us working in HMD and VR research! Sure, they have tracking markers and mocap, but with Kinect for Windows ( Beginning Kinect Programming with the Microsoft Kinect SDK ) markers and mocap suits are no longer even needed for immersion. If you're still skeptical about VR, you MUST READ Infinite Reality: The Hidden Blueprint of Our Virtual Lives (P.S.) ! Second Life aside, nothing will stop VR from skyrocketing in the next 10 years! There are plenty of reviews here for consumers-- I'm making a plea here for engineers, researchers, professors, etc. to grab these, pull out the code, and start handshaking with Kinect, for example! I know, Sony is closed code and Microsoft Kinect is open source, but these boys just don't want their game engines becoming generic like DVD players. For those of us in the VR community, supporting Sony, and Microsoft, and anyone else taking risk on a VR comeback is worth it's weight in gold! One example: we're taking groups of autistic kids, mocapping them getting into a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation rig with these HMDs on (via Kinect), then converting them and their reactions - instructions to avatars for education and orientation of other kids (via Poser, Blender, Maya, etc.).Comparing this unit to it's $30,000 cousins, here are a few differences:-- Blacks and whites are critical in presenting color, and they are as good (if not better!) in color rendering as their more expensive cousins.-- If you use them for a "pit" experience, the expensive version tracks a little better, but if you put these on tightly enough, you can still get an astonishing pre frontal cortex toe curl reaction. They are not quite as stable when moving your head as the costly twins.-- For those who worry about kids doing too much in vr and not enough out in the yard, don't forget that track-render-display in vr is exactly the same as what the brain does in the "real" world-- we're avatars OUT HERE too!-- As mentioned, these don't really have the level of tracking of expensive HMD's, but with Kinect, that's not needed any longer! Hooking your 360 to these with Kinect is literally mind blowing.-- Our grandkids will be wearing something like this (13th Floor aside) to go to school in London while sitting in Tennessee some day. Global knowledge exchange is already here, why not let the kids in on the flow? Without units like this, and far less expensive in fact, our schools will lag behind competitive nations in STEM curricula.-- I personally compared this unit with an expensive big sister on a 3D flight sim-- with the right fit the T1's were BETTER in direct view than a US Navy unit built only a year ago! To be honest the peripherals need a lot of work, but come on, I'm talking about comparing with a unit that goes for over $90,000.If you're an early adopter, and regardless of your motive for picking these up, I'd like to personally thank you for supporting vendors that take the risks to bring $30,000 technologies into the reach of many more thinkers, tinkerers and researchers! It's way past time we start getting less and less expensive HMD's out here. I personally think we need to get them down below $50, but we've got to start somewhere!!--C.A. Great HDTV if your apartment can't fit one
I live in an apartment so I can't bring a 42incher in, its just a studio so space is a premium. So I was deciding between this thing and a 3D projector for playing games / watching movies. I decided on this for a few reasons:1) looks cool, no one else has these and enhances my geek factor2) 3D projector + 3D glasses + 3D converter is about $1200+ for a decent setup. This is $800 in comparison.3) this takes up almost no room at all. No room needed for projecting anything either. It's just a headset. So having used it for a few days here are my thoughts:1) It takes a while to adjust the headset so that its comfortable. Mainly, you can't stand up with this for too long. I can use this with my PS Move semi-reclining, but fully standing up is not possible due to being so front heavy. I mainly use this lying down on my bed, and after 3 hours your forehead will begin to get uncomfortable.2) Picture quality is pretty amazing. I've used the Myvu Crystal viewer before so I've used these HUDs before, but these OLED screens are fantastic. Picture is bright and clear. Its like having a 75 inch TV in front of you, but you can still see the edges.3) Light guard is annoying to put on, and you pretty much always need to have it to block light. So why didn't Sony just build this in? When would I ever NOT use the light guard? Its annoying to fit that thing in.4) 3D quality is good. Some other reviewers say its the BEST, and I would say things don't pop up that much, but its true there's no ghosting or anything. I haven't tried other 3D viewers so maybe this is the best and I'm just expecting too much. I watched Transformers: Dark of the Moon, played Uncharted 3 and some scenes were indeed quite immersive. but overall 3D is underused in most movies and games.5) Audio quality is good. The surround is pretty amazing. There were times I thought MY phone was ringing or someone was knocking on MY door. But it was just the game.6) Great integration with SONY PS3. I just plug in the HDMI and I'm good to watch movies and play games. You'd most want to use it with a PS3 anyways, I don't think hooking it up to a PC will be optimal experience.Overall - is it worth $800? For single guys like me who play alot of single player games and watch movies by themselves and live in a studio - yes this is amazing. You cannot find a 75" 3D TV and 5.1 SS setup for only $800. On the other hand - if you constantly have friends over, play Wii a lot, watch movies with the gf or what not, this isn't a good option. Just get a TV or use a computer monitor or projector instead. That's my 2 cents. 4 stars. The only problem I have with it is the inability to use it standing up or for longer periods of time.

Really want to love it; didn't know what to expect
The unit is beautifully crafted and has a future-esque feel to it. When I put it on I became immediately aware that all I had read about the unit before my purchase wouldn't have led me to understand what it was actually like to wear it. It turns out that it's a lot like being in the theatre and seeing a large movie, and this experience makes me want to really love the unit, but what I didn't realize was that it's really like looking through binoculars to see the movie. What happens is that there is a whole lot of lens distortion and this is what accounts for other observers indicating that the image is fuzzy on the edges. One cannot naturally see the whole screen in perfect clearness unless one gets the headpiece adjusted quite exact. And the adjustment is much more than just up/down and left/right--it is critical to also get the focal distance correct, and that means front/back placement as well. All told, there's a small pinhole of super clear viewing, and then the edges and such are blurry like a Gaussian filter. When I tried to use the unit for gaming, I very nearly threw up within about 30 seconds, but I'm very motion sickness prone. If you're sensitive to motion, then don't get these for gaming. The goggles were purchased for a multitude of reasons to help justify their high cost, but it turns out that all I can really use them for is movies/cinema, and even with that, the real excitement comes from the feeling of being in the movie theatre, but it's quite a wash as far as that only "feature" and all the drawbacks such as *constantly* fiddling with the placement, looking for that sweet spot, etc. I find myself revisiting the helmet from time to time, and I just got some new eye glasses that may make my focal distance a bit easier to adjust the helmet to, so the device may get some more use, but ultimately my poor vision and motion sickness problems make this unit a bit of a novelty and largely unused. The unit itself is of terrific quality and the picture is nice. For those reviewers that griped about the pixelation and said it was the deal breaker, they must be more okay with Gaussian blurs because I think the blurry edges are way more distracting than the very slight pixelation. I'm going to keep them; I like the glasses, but their use is quite limited and I probably wouldn't have purchased them if I understood what I would see when I looked through the lenses.

Expensive toy?
There had been quite a few moments where I doubted myself "heavily". Was this a stupid purchase? Now 1 1/2 months later the novelty has worn and I think Its a essential part of kit. As I travel for work these are great for hotels. My thoughts as I tried 3D the first time? Pretty much felt like I had just flown with frikin teradactils. You can literally smell the dirty teradactil feet as they cut you off. My gaming improved ten fold... Cause lt felt like I was being shot at. Sudenly you notice details like bullets flying by as you fight for your life. Watching movies you also notice new things like how tall actors are or they look different cause its like your standing there. I find myself rewatching allot of movies on these. And then theres the sound from those apparenty dodgy headphones based on other reviews? Well my beats headphones are great but I would say these are better. Withought a huge boring explanation it has to do with headphone mounting and sound tuning for maximum imersion in my opinion. Sounds great! must have replaced my tv? Problem is they isolate you, so if your watching something that requires smartphone distraction. Not so much cause your completely imersed in this thing.
