Is the entire surface covered in foil? Or just one side?

Yes, both sides are covered in foil. Very satisfied with this product

what is the thickness? i have a narrow spot between wall and tank....want to make sure it will fit.

I am not near it now. But it is thin ( ~1/4 inch) very pliable, and easy to cut pleats into so that a flat surface conforms to a round object circumferentially and at the top. It can be done individually but is MUCH more easily applied as a twosome.

Its aluminized but it is a thin solid layer and does not have the feel of bubble wrap

One large piece & one thicker 2'x7' piece but no instructions. What's the smaller part for?

Im sorry about that...the smaller part is to wrap the top of the tank around where the water lines enter the tank... most of the time there is extra material left over depending on the size of the tank
