Does the item maintain its shape or does it collapse like other canvas bags? canvas

I've found that this bag does not collapse when empty. Maybe it sags a little, but not so much that it's difficult to get my stuff into it quickly. I really hate having to fiddle around holding the opening back with one hand whilst manouvring my kit into it - especially when I'm rushing to get off to work. I've been using mine for a few months and can't remember feeling irritated by collapsing sides, so I think you will be pleased with it.

Is there a Laptop compartment?

Hi not specifically, but there is a section underneath for wet clothes, separate from main bag. Not sure if that would be protective enough for laptop.

Is it suitable as airline carry on bag?

Yes it is. Can be compressed easily
