Gay Relationship at Core of Story
This book has a well-plotted storyline about the aftermath of the drowning deaths of two teenagers, Ethan Monaghan and Josh Butler. POV characters are Zoe and Jake (Ethan’s parents), his brother Harley, Josh’s mom, and an unnamed male character who opens the book. When Zoe Monaghan begins looking into Ethan’s death, everyone involved—family members and friends, and even school friends—hide dark secrets which could harm or even destroy them, plus their families. What secret is Josh’s parents hiding? Why is Ethan’s dad always at work and never home? What caused the rift between Ethan and Josh? What was Josh really like? Did Harley, Ethan’s older brother, have anything to do with the drownings? As a reader, I asked: Who is the unnamed POV man? Is this character’s thoughts time-jumping? Who is this man obsessed with, and which young man was he grooming and stalking? To this author’s credit, she chose a still-controversial topic and handled it skillfully and with sensitivity. Here are Zoe’s words from the last chapter: “Neither Jake or I have ever been prejudiced against anyone for their beliefs, sexual orientation or anything else, and all we ever wished for our sons was that they never hurt anyone.”

Kept me guessing
Good mystery with a lot of puzzle pieces that kept me reading and constantly coming up with new theories. The main character is Zoe, but we get inside the heads of multiple characters who all are keeping their own secrets. Overall one of the better psychological thrillers I’ve read and I enjoyed the main characters. I was able to put a few pieces of the puzzle together, but was wrong on others. My only con is the ending explanation was a bit too rushed and heavy on exposition explaining what happened instead of unraveling the mystery a bit more through action. I was also left a bit confused on one aspect with Harvey, but don’t want to spoil anything. Recommend.

Good solid story
I am a huge fan of K.Croft and I'd been anxiously awaiting her new novel. Overall it was a great read but on this one the plot was a little too twisty, I think because the book was a little too long. Don't get me wrong, I love long novels but the length of this one left more time for more twists...if that makes any sense.Because of that, the end was kind of anti-climatic for me. But overall solid book from Ms. Croft and I will continue to be a fan.

Brilliant other than....
Brilliant nail biting read that keeps you guessing. Would have given it 5 stars but the narrator was absolutely awful! I have never battled so much to continue to listen and only did so as was so hooked on the story itself. Forced expression which sounded more like a news reader or perhaps even a machine, or something. And Leo’s accent...? What was that?? Hope I never have to stumble upon another book narrated by her! It was incredibly annoying!! Other than that, brilliant.

A Must Read Thriller Novel!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was drawn into it right from the first chapter. The characters became very real to me by the author's characterizations. This book was hard to put down and I read it within two days. The ending was a shock to me and very cleverly written. I never knew until the end who the unidentified person was that appeared in its own chapters. I loved that twist to the story! If you enjoy reading thriller mysteries, then this book should definitely be on your list. I look forward to reading other novels that Kathryn Croft has written.

Suspenseful and gripping read
It is hard enough to lose a child in an accident. The toll of such heartbreak can tear families apart. But having survived the tragedy once, can Zoe's marriage last when she is faced with the awful truth that her son's death may not have been an accident after all. When she is faced with an email claiming that there was more to her son's death was more than it appears, Zoe is determined to find out not just who sent the e-mail but if there is any truth in it while her husband Jake just wants to dismiss it as a cruel prank. As she sets on about finding out what really happened that night she is faced with all manner of obstacles and truths she may wish she had never learned. This is very much a slow building and suspenseful read, full of emotional turmoil and secrets which are gradually uncovered as the story progresses. As in all books I have read by Kathryn Croft, there is a strong lead character, one who is quickly established and easy to like, and whose determination to find out the truth really drives the story onward. There are many characters who make up this story with the chapters told from different points of view, predominantly Zoe, but also Jake, their son Harley and Roberta, whose son, Josh, also died along side Zoe's son, Ethan.Interestingly it is only Zoe's chapters that are told in first person, pulling you completely into her world as the one frantically trying to find the truth. The others are told in third person present, making you feel a touch removed from their actions. This is an intriguing way of writing the book as at some stage you envisage that all of them are hiding something and this just adds to the intrigue. Certainly Roberta knows more than she is saying and Jake has a pretty big secret he is keeping too.Set against all of this though, are chapters told by an, as yet, unknown narrator. You get a really sickening sense of foreboding as you read them, not knowing how they fit into the story but knowing that something unsavoury is happening, something which will blow the whole thing wide open. These scenes may make you uncomfortable as you can tell what is happening but perhaps not quite in its entirety. There are some moments of great tension in this book, in spite of it essentially being a cold case. The ending has plenty of drama as well as some final revelations which may surprise you, and there are one or two moments along the way which certainly move the story away from your average family drama. There is one scene, involving Roberta and her husband which I found a little incredulous and you may have to suspend disbelief over the aftermath, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book which I read in around a day.All in all, The Warning is a story full of suspense, tension, secrets and lies and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Compelling but convoluted.
I loved this book for the most part and was pulled into the twisty tale, wanting to unravel the mystery surrounding the deaths of two teenage boys and who was sending the mum of one of the boys, anonymous messages. I could not help feel however that as the book progressed it became quite convoluted and it became more of a frustrating read. The ending I thought was disappointing and one that I still don't quite understand. The reader is kept guessing right up until the end as to whether the boys death was an accident and if not, who was responsible out of the characters involved in the story, then right at the end, 2 new characters are introduced. I was left very confused. I have read most of Croft's previous works and have enjoyed them but I wasn't so impressed by this I'm afraid...

Not impressed.
So many e-books are advertised as gripping psychological thrillers. This was not one. By the time I had finally got to the end I'd forgotten what actually happened to the two boys. I'd been keen to finish this book because although I wasn't interested in the waffling way it was written I hate to give up on a book. Each chapter -,indeed page - could have benefited from a good old precis job on it. A glutton for punishment I actually trawled back through various chapters to find out what happened, as if I cared! How sad is that?Needless to say I will not be purchasing further books by this author.

Hooks you early on...
This novel has the early inciting incident, a number of further twists, and above-average entertainment value. Yes, I am glad I read it.A few criticisms, though. To me, it’s not fully credible that two 14-year-olds would sneak out in the middle of the night and go to a river to have an argument. They could have done that in waking hours in a much safer location! Similarly, I don’t see how two teenage friends would have a sleepover when they had a major conflict going on between them. Two stronger back-stories in place of the two cited would have made the story a lot stronger. No link, to my mind, between the story’s title and the actual story! Not really important, though.

Not a twist that could be guessed
This book started with promise of a dark but interesting intrigue. A mother loses a son in an accident, but whilst finally come to terms with It and leaving the area and starting over, weird messages keep being sent to Zoe the bereaved mother. Unfortunately I felt the Book tended to go downhill rather, but you are not aware till much later, so I felt very let down. Sorry author I felt you added unnecessary ‘bits’ which were not well plotted so the ending was indeed a surprise and knowing the characters I found it hard to believe!
