Kevin Parker's Musical Feast At The Borderline
Tame Impala first came to my attention several years ago-primarily as representative of a psychedelic revival out of Australia. With Mister Parker as a one man band in the studio and as a full band for touring, first heard this album via their previous album Currents. And that one wound Parker blending more electro and post disco elements into his sound. That got me looking forward to a follow up, though not knowing if there'd be one. Happily, we did get one. And it absolutely went to that musical place I was hoping it would.Songs such as the hit "Borderline", "One More Year" , "Breath Deeper", "Is It True", the pulsing "Glimmer and the shuffling "Lost In Yeterday" all focus on different varieties of dance rhythms with some catchy yet complex melodies. "Tomorrow's Dust" has a beautifully acoustic Brazilian melody about it. "It Might Be Time" brings in that textured early 80's Hall & Oates style electric piano rhythm . "One More Hour" actually takes a turn into a more prog oriented run-just to discuss my personal favorites on here.In terms of Parker's musicality on this, he is mixing a lot of different elements very seamlessly. His pretty falsetto voice retains that psychedelic echo and reverb, his arrangements have the sleekness of late 70's West coast pop yet his rhythms come from a variety of sources. Such as post disco dance music, retro Latin folk soul and electronic dance styles. And all in service to the songcraft. Honestly, wish this was the direction of more pop music right now. And so far, this is probably my favorite new album of 2020.
