A summit meeting of great Italian directors of the era, Boccaccio '70 is an antipasto platter of vintage sex symbols and naughty material starring Sophia Loren (Yesterday Today & Tomorrow), Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita) & Romy Schneider (The Trial). Cooked up and bankrolled by Carlo Ponti and American producer Joseph E. Levine, the four-part film was meant to tap the international smash of Fellini's La Dolce Vita, which gave audiences some refreshingly, you know, "mature" subject matter. Four directors were hired to create segments ostensibly based on the tales of Boccaccio: Federico Fellini (in the lull between La Dolce Vita and 8-1/2), Luchino Visconti, Vittorio de Sica, and Mario Monticello. 1962 - Color - 205 minutes - 1.66:1 - Italian with English Subtitles.

Four great short films, but which one is the better?
Boccaccio wrote bawdy stories and collected them in his Decameron. Here are four bawdy short films by four distinguished Italian film directors. Inexplicably, the Blu-ray Disc box displays the faces of only three of its leading stars, Misses Romy Schneider, Sophia Loren and Anita Ekberg in the cover. They omit Ms. Marina Solinas who, believe or not, stars in the one fully original and distinctive film: what happens when a married couple escapes from its neighbors and family who oppress them and choose to live in loneliness in a moderns high-rise. Anita plays a perfect sexy feline to director Fellini's (no pun intended) advertising adventure for fresh milk. Romy is as always, a pleasure to watch, especially when she wears those Coco Channel suits. And Sophia plays director De Sica's favorite character, the busty tramp with the heart of gold. All four of them are goood!

3 is lucky, four stories, not quite
Renzo and Luciana was cut and we could've done better without it in Italian language only. It's a very long and talky story of a couple living together before marriage and the conflicts it creates with the girl's parents and her boss where she works. Almost a docudrama. Two stars. The Temptation of Dr. Antonio: Always my favorite satire on censorship from director Fellini about a prude's ambition to ban a milk billboard has great fantasy sequences with Anita Ekberg. Four Stars. The Job: A wealthy man has his affair with a hooker exposed by the media to his wife. She wants the job, too. The most cynical segment of the film. Three stars. The Raffle: By far the best of the four stories when Sophia Loren becomes the prize for a timid man who wins the lottery. It makes me laugh every time, even 30 years later. Four stars. There aren't many extras added to the discs, and they are mostly about The Raffle. You do have your choice of English or Italian for three of the stories.

BOCCACCIO '70
It brought back fond memories of Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren and Romy Schneider (who died young). The film hadfour wonderful directors. The restored footage of the episode that was edited out for the US version does slow downthe film, a bit, but the segment is interesting. The DVD also had special features which included the ENGLISH and ITALIAN version of the film.I liked it, a [email protected]

Classic Neo Realism
Anita Eckberg and Sophia Loren are great in their respective stories. It was made during a medley style stories. This was popular in the early 60's. Like preteen kids obsessing over their first love who is a grown woman, these stories are in that fashion.
