Good first impression
The item arrived yesterday, it looks a lot more expensive than it actually is. It is quite stable standing on rubber feet and it is quite shock absorbent (moving it up/down etc. with a CD on and there was no cut/interruption). I bought it primarily to play my CD collection and it connects to a 2015 MacBook Pro on one of the USB ports. No extra software was required but that is normal for Macs. So far so good, I have played both CDs and music DVDs with no problem. I only had to re-insert a couple of CDs as it failed to read the first time but it worked on second attempt. The device reads fast and it produces very little noise every now and then when it reads, which is expected due to its mechanical parts, this does not detract from the listening experience even at low volumes. A few things to note: the eject button doesn't always work, I use the eject on iTunes and that always gets the job done. The cable, as others have mentioned, is too small and that is OK if you can use a powered USB hub (works fine on mine with 5 more devices attached to the same hub) or you can use an extension USB cable. The tray is not very sturdy and putting a CD on requires both hands primarily due to some difficulty to mount a CD on the base (needs to be at a very specific point and be pushed firmly), then when closing the tray the tray is not that balanced so you need to push on the right hand side more rather than the middle, that is the only way to make it go in and close. At this price point I was not really expecting the works and these (for me) are all small things really. Overall, I am happy so far and it does well what I bought it for.

ED100 DVD drive. Cheap but surprisingly good!
I like playing PC games on my laptop. Sadly, modern laptops no, longer come with a built in DVD drive. If I want to play one of my older DVD based games now, I have to buy the game again as a Steam download, which I resent. However here's one old game that I love called Cryostasis which you can't actually buy as a download. It was this that prompted me to buy an external DVD player. I didn't want to spend a lot of money but when you read the reviews of these cheap external drives on Amazon, there are A LOT of horror stories out there. Nevertheless I went for the Oakcastle ED100 primarily because it was ultra cheap (£11.25) on Prime & I figured if it was rubbish, I hadn't wasted that much cash. Well it arrived the same day I ordered it & surprisingly, it's actually rather nice. I plugged it in via the USB-C socket, it powered up & it was immediately recognised by Windows 10. It installed Cryostasis no problem & now I'm happily working my way through it. Obviously it's too early to say how robust the drive will be over time but based on first impressions, I'm really happy I chose the ED100. It does exactly what I wanted it for without any fuss so, for what it's worth, I'd recommend it.

Great for the price
Bought this to play my old computer games since my new laptop doesn't have a disc drive. Very pleased with the quality of product and it's very easy to use - just plug in and play (just remember to download VLC media player if you are trying to play DVDs on Windows 10). My only criticism would be the cable is attached underneath the drive on the left side and it is quite short so sits a little awkwardly depending on where I position it, as well as the fact you wouldn't be able to replace the cable if it broke, but can't really complain for the price; it does the job well.

Highly recommended for laptops with no drive
Bought this for the same reason many do... Laptops just do not have optical drives now. I have to say that I am very impressed with this drive. First of all it's incredibly small and thin. The case has no unnecessary frills yet still manages not to look cheap. There is a recess to keep the usb lead which is a nice touch. As many have mentioned the cable is very short, however this is not a problem for me as I'm using it on a laptop. I could imagine this being a small issue on a desktop in some cases but there are plenty of ways around it. The drive works flawlessly for me on Windows 10. I have ripped some dvds and music cds with no hassle. I have also burned many discs already too and had no issues with compatibility. I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it for laptop users. I'm unsure whether desktop users would be able to use it straight out of the box though. Still a 5 star from me though.

Great quality, great warranty and easy to use.
Very premium feeling. No sharp edges, only a little larger than a dvd, and comes with a cable that allows you to use either regular USB or USB C! It's plug and play and works great. Microsoft have removed the ability to play DVDs using Windows Media Player so if you're using Windows, the manufacturer recommends you use VLC Media Player to play DVDs (and I would too) or AnyPlayer from the Microsoft Store will work too. Mine came with a 3 Year Warranty after registering. For this price what more could you want?

Excellent value for money
Whilst the expected Write/Re-Write/DVD player markings are missing from the product and the packaging (with no description of these features either!), I have been reassured that it is as described and have no reason to doubt - I just cannot check. The customer service has been quick and polite. Otherwise it looks lovely, is light and the in-built duel lead is great. I have only had the chance to use it to read discs, but it is very easy to use and has excellent speed, with minimal noise (nothing more than you might expect). Whilst I cannot review its full functions as of yet, so far so good and would definitely recommend, particularly for the price.

Good drive, but cable is disappointingly short
Purchased this as a replacement for another external DVD-RW drive that was "faulty"... or so I thought. It appears it was actually the USB extension cable I was using that was faulty and causing the drive to go haywire. This one wouldn't even power on that extension lead... And that brings me to the only downside I can see to this drive, and possibly most drives... the USB cable is disappointingly short. I haven't measured it, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's no more than 10-15cm... This is perfectly adequate if you're connecting it to a laptop where it can quite happily sit right next to it... but I am using this with a desktop PC mid-tower where the case provides to facility to install an internal 5.25 drive (as with most modern cases). The cable on this drive is so short that the only place I can plug it in directly is on top of the case which blocks my exhaust fans & generally looks untidy. If I plug it into the back of the machine, where I'd ideally like to connect it, it hangs from the port and barely reaches the desk. The case is taller than the cable length... This is a poor design choice in my opinion. Not everyone uses a laptop... The cable should be at least long enough to ensure it can sit flat on the desk. This isn't an unusually large PC case, it's pretty standard. With that said though, this seems to be the only issue with the drive and it can be sorted with a USB extension (although I don't think I should have to)... The drive itself runs perfectly well. I mainly use it for ripping CDs to MP3/WAV for data backup purposes as I'm still a big collector of CDs but like to have a backup copy (especially of those rarer ones!) It can be a little loud when it's ripping, but you'd expect some sort of noise from any DVD drive spinning really. Nothing out of the ordinary, could be a little quieter... but for the price, it does the job really well. The size of the drive is great. It's no bigger than it needs to be which is perfect. My previous drive had a much bigger footprint so took up a bit more space on the desk than was necessary. It may not seem much, but when you're already tight for space, this makes a difference. I'd recommend it if you can see past / work around the cable length issue.

Simple, works, no hassle (including working on linux)
I got rid of my desktop's optical drive about 18 months ago, after realising I hadn't used it for years (and it tidies up the cabling in a modern PC to do so). And then.. then I had a CD I needed to rip, and I'd got rid of the laptop that had an optical drive, and... and yeah, I could re-fit the optical drive I've taken out or... This great little optical drive just works out of the box, the integrated cable is the only thing needed, and it's recognised immediately. No drivers needed... just works. Excellent !!
