Duraflo 621212 Gable Vent, 12-Inch X 12-Inch

Seems sturdy and looks good.

Used for steel building gable vent.

I was a bit hesitant after reading some other reviews, but this vent was perfect. We had a huge thunderstorm with wind blown rain the day after install with no water inside whatsoever (I made sure to have the back lip inside the siding and caulked the top just in case). The vent also had just a bit of flex which minimized any space between the stepped siding. FYI, you may want to add some screen on the back for piece of mind though, as the current screen will stop most bugs but not all. Total time of install after cutting the hole was about 5 minutes.

I'm on the windward side of Oahu and the trade winds are hard on home and hardware; installed 3 winter 2017-18 (ya, ha-ha). I first primed with Zinsser Bondz (quart size mixed with 50% tint of my house paint) and then painted them the house color; added Flood Floetrol (latex based) to both primer and paint so I could use a brush. Buying two more to replace a pair of rusty metal gable vents.

This vent is described as a " Gable Vent, 12-inch x 12 inch," but it does not measure 12" x 12". The overall dimensions are about 14" x 14". One might therefore assume is is designed to fit a 12" x 12" rough opening, but that's not the case either because there is a raised box section on the back of the vent that measures 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".Fortunately, I was able to cut the raised box off the back with a sharp utility knife because the material that the vent is made from is relatively soft polyethylene. And that brings up another negative point - polyethylene is very difficult to paint ( even paint like Krylon Fusion won't stick to it in the long term), so if you're planning to paint the vent look elsewhere.That being said, however, the vent is high quality with no distortions, surface imperfections, or molding flash. The supplier just needs to list at least a couple of dimensions in the description. A photo of the back and specifying the type of material the vent is made from would also be helpful.

What you don't see in this picture or any others is the flange on the back that's about 3/4" long. Obviously that's great if you have a hole that size and you can fit it in and seal it. That wasn't my case, where I needed to replace a non-standard flush vent that had broken over the years. I sawed the flange off with a reciprocating saw and the plastic was soft so it was easy. The plastic screening is narrow and I'm watching to see if it clogs with bugs or grit. It worked as I needed it to.

This gable vent was a replacement for the original vent for my backyard shed. I had to trim my opening but that had nothing to do with the vent itself. A GREAT product.
